It explains the lack of a single study method and provides core principles: start earlier than expected, take as many practice tests as possible, and plan retakes strategically based on LSAC reporting. It also covers LSAC registration and website guidance, recommended timing around application deadlines, and selection considerations for prep resources and books.","LSAT PREPARATION \nPreparing to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) is one of the most important steps toward your law school application. Contrary to popular belief, your LSAT score isn’t the be-all and end-all of your getting into the law school of your dreams – other factors are really important, too – but it’s mighty significant. \nYour LSAT score is significant, first, because a good score is necessary for acceptance to the law school of your choice, and some schools are more competitive in this regard than others (consult with the pre-law advisor: the LSAC website provides data about GPA and LSAT profiles of accepted applicants for every law school, and it’s wise to be aware of where you fit in this range for law schools of your choice). And your LSAT score is highly significant in another way, too: most law schools offer most scholarships or financial aid packages on a merit basis and the LSAT figures big in that calculus as well. \nThere is no one “right” way to prepare: everyone’s learning style and study habits are different. But there are a few principles you need to be aware of: \n1. You’ll need to start preparing sooner (ahead of actually taking the test) than you probably expect. \n2. There is simply no substitute for taking as many practice tests as you can. \n3. Most law school applicants take the LSAT two or three times – once to get the experience of the exam, then again after further prep in hopes ofa higher score, and so on – which again means starting sooner than you may be expecting in order to be confident you’ve given yourself every opportunity to achieve your best score through mulitple testings. NOTE: Law schools receive your test history via report from LSAC, i.e. when you took the exam and what score(s) you received and/or an indication that you opted out of reporting particular score(s) . This means that you need to be mindful of the course of your preparation. In other words, if you take the LSAT and get score X, and two months later take it again and get a score that is X again or not much higher, then it will indicate to those reviewing your application that you hadn’t used your further prep between test dates wisely, which will not help your chances. So, be strategic in all these regards and don’t retake the LSAT without confidence you are positioned to improve. \nBasics \nThe Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) administers the LSAT. There is no single more \nimportant source to learn about the test – upcoming dates oftest opportunities, how to register, ways of taking it, and so on – than the LSAC website. You’ll register with LSAC anyway to apply to law school, and should have done so well before the point of application. Take time to study the LSAT section ofthe LSAC website very carefully. You’ll also see that they offer some practice tests; take advantage of that. (Go to [lsac.org](lsac.org), register if you haven’t already, and then explore under the LSAT and LawHub tabs) . \nTiming \nAssume you are planning to apply to law school in your senior year of college (in fact, many people apply after college graduation, but let’s assume for a moment that you’ll apply as a senior) . Law school applications open in the early autumn (think beginning of September) and you will want to have all your credentials in order before then. (You could in theory wait till you have the results ofa fall test date – usually this means September or October – but that’s cutting it pretty close.) \nThat means you would want to achieve a high score at latest during one of the summer testtaking opportunities (usually this means June or August), and that might mean taking your first test in the spring (usually April), in order to give you the chance for one or two retakes to satisfy yourself of your best score. That in turn means that you should be planning to begin your preparation for the LSAT during the winter or very early spring preceding the autumn when you’ll apply.
