But on entering the vast, almost empty, lecture hall and seeing a smattering of students in rows barely acknowledging each other, Arthur felt disheartened. The place still smelled new, with its plywood walls that were designed to add a touch of “nature” but only managed to draw attention to the steel and glass of the surrounding buildings. This was not how he had pictured his agronomy degree.  \nArthur wondered what moment of madness had led to the AgroParisTech campus being relocated to the concrete desert that was the Saclay plateau. The previous year ’s cohort had still been able to spend their freshman year at the Château de Grignon, amid three hundred hectares of fields and forests. It was where generations of students had learned how to milk ewesand get laid in the underbrush. Instead, Arthur now had to swipe a card twenty times a day to get through security barriers and then find his bearings in a maze of indistinguishable corridors where the only things that  \ndiffered were the numbers on the doors. He had never seen so little nature as in the six months he had been at college. The only chirping to be heard outside was the sound of bulldozers ripping up the earth. The students’dorms looked like the classrooms, which in turn looked like gym lockers. Sure, there were efficiencies to being on this campus where everything was at your fingertips, but efficiencies that allowed time to do what? Watch porn? Labor over perfecting chemical formulas? Who felt like going for a drink in a cafeteria that was cleaned twice a day, and who felt like being on display in their goldfish bowl of a student union room, located smack bang in the middle of the central thoroughfare?  \nArthur had felt like he was in exile from day one. Previously one of the most fertile places in France, the Saclay plateau had been transformed into a functional desert, an interminable commercial precinct where instead of business logos there was branding for some of France’s most prestigious colleges, the likes of Polytechnique, Mines-Télécom, or the École Normale Supérieure. It was supposedly a magnet for the best minds in France, students as well as researchers. But what happens to a mind confined by an unrelentingly geometric space, blinded by the neon pallor of the corridors, overshadowed by a forest of cranes? It turns into an atrophied supermachine, ready to reproduce with other supermachines in order to create a world of even more supermachines.
