Lovecraft and the impact Lovecraft’s fiction had on his life and writing. The piece traces early reading experiences, first encounters with specific stories and magazines, and later periods of correspondence and shared fandom. It also describes Leiber’s evolving relationships with writers and editors, his involvement in Lovecraft fan publications, and his critical view of subsequent collaborations and pastiches, including an essay analyzing Lovecraft’s style and themes.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/","Story \nI read Lovecraft's“The Color Out of Space”in the summer of1927 when I was halfway through my senior year at Lake View HighSchool in Chicago. It put me off Amazing Stories, which hitherto hadpleased me with its tales in which science could solve almost any mys-tery.Its powerful pessimistic statement of mysteries beyond the ken ofscience and of the futility of life in the face of the inevitabliity of deathdepressed me for weeks. It frightened me as much and more profoundlythan The Cat and the Canary.(In those days I eschewed Weird Tales-its stories were too morbidly uncanny for me.Even Fu Manchu scaredme-all those centipedes and spiders!). \nIn 1932 or thereabouts, when I was rooming at Hitchcock Hall atthe University of Chicago,I read in about two days most of Lovecraft'sprofessionally published stories, preserved in magazine tearsheets by anacquaintance whose name I have forgotten.By then I was less afraid ofthe dark and had a new lifelong friend,Franklin MacKnight, withwhom I shared a taste for the eerie.(He loaned me the October 1923Weird Tales with \"Dagon\"in it and I lost it-even then a crime forwhich I am still deeply ashamed.) \nAll of the stories thrilled me.They matchlessly conveyed,I felt, the fascinating and strangely sparkling mysteriousness of the cosmos. My enthusiasm was uncritical;I recall thinking that\"The Moon Bog,\"a trifle, was perhaps the best.I describe my reactions in more detail in\"My Correspondence with Lovecraft\"”in Fresco:The University of De-troit Quarterly,Spring 1958. \n“At the Mountains of Madness”surfaced spectacularly in the Jan-uary,February,March 1936 issues of Astounding Stories.During a pro-tracted spell of zero weather I read it aloud to my new-wed wife,Jon-quil Stephens, who loved supernatural horror stories,in an apartment \non Chicago's South Side which we occupied the first three months ofour marriage.Later that spring, when we'd moved in with my parents inBeverly Hills,California,we read“The Shadow Out of Time”in thesame magazine and also reread\"The Silver Key”and\"The Whisperer inDarkness,\"which I bought in tearsheets from a Los Angeles schoolboy,Forrest J.Ackerman. \nThen that summer Jonquil wrote Lovecraft care of Weird Tales andfor the next half-year,until his death, there was much furious corres-ponding(described in my Fresco article). We also read “The Haunter ofthe Dark”and \"The Thing on the Doorstep\"as they appeared in WeirdTales. \nIt was an odd period.I was supposed to be humping myself to getpublicity and jobs as a movie actor, but all my real interest was focusedon an obscure pulp writer and my efforts to write stories more or lesslike his.In the summer of 1937 we met Lovecraft's young fellow fan-tasy writers Robert Bloch and Henry Kuttner, who had learned aboutme from Lovecraft, and later(when we'd returned to editorial work inChicago)August Derleth, whose Arkham House published The Outsiderand Others in 1939.I caught up on the Lovecraft I'd missed, especiallyhis almost book-length essay\"Supernatural Horror in Literature.\" \nBack in Los Angeles in 1942,living in Santa Monica Canyon nearthe sea,Jonquil and I met(at the home of our neighbor Craig Rice, thepopular mystery writer)Francis T.Laney, publisher of the early Love-craft fan magazine The Acolyte, which had some fine Lovecraft coversby Alva Rogers. For it I wrote two short articles about Lovecraft's fic-tion.(Later Laney“gafiated”from fandom and wrote about it all in hisremarkable,mimeographed,book-length Ah,Sweet Idiocy!)By then Ihad sold supernatural horror stories to Weird Tales and Unknown,es-pecially my witchcraft novel Conjure Wife, inspired by Jo","cbCainbw8D7h4pmP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainbw8D7h4pmP","pdf",19946513,36,"English","# LOVECRAFT IN MY LIFE\n## Early
