20 NUMBER 3
CANDANREADER
a new view of louis riel ■ matt cohen'sbreakthrough novel■ lévesque's québec
# LUBJELECTION

Louis 'David'Riel
# A fresh and compelling lookat a great Canadian hero

By Thomas Flanagan
Reviewed by Robert Fulford
Land the most melodramatic figurein Canadian history, but he is rarelyseen as a religious personality. We viewhim as a rebel,as a métis nationalist, and as one of the men who shaped theCanadian West.We see him essentially asa radical politician, and we often com-pare him with various left-wing re-formers of his time or later times.Hisdefeat-as we depict it in our textbooks,
our TV shows, our plays, our mostfamous opera-is the defeat of a poli-tical ideal and a political movement.
Wrong, says Thomas Flanagan in thiscompelling and original book.Riel was areligious figure who acted on religiousimpulses and saw his own life in theCanadian West-and indeed in the worldat large-as the fulfilment of a religiousmission ordained by God.Riel was anunorthodox Catholic who set out, among other things,to reform theCatholic Church. He believed profound-ly if erratically in his heaven-ordainedpurpose.
Some of this we have all known for along time, but most historians havetended to dismiss it as irrelevant:theysee these beliefs as Riel's private super-stitions at best,or Riel's outright mad-ness at worst.Riel's own contem-poraries,when they did not follow him, tended to dismiss him as crazy.ButFlanagan sets aside this traditional view-point as well.He takes Riel's religiousambitions seriously.
Riel,Flanagan argues-and arguesvery persuasively-was no crazier thanmost prophets. He was a self-proclaimedmessiah who believed that he came tosave the world. His evident madness layin the fact that his beliefs were unac-ceptable to many of those around him-they defined madness, and placed Riel

| within their definition. But by objective
standards his beliefs were no more
outlandish than those of Mohammed,
Jesus,or Moses.
Flanagan-who teaches in the depart-
ment of political science at the Univer-
sity of Calgary-has gone carefully over
the Riel record,including some docu-
mentation that has come to light since
the appearance of George Stanley's
standard Louis Riel(1963).He traces
the religious views of Riel as they
developed over his lifetime and changed
under the pressure of events-including
the pressure to conceal his most outra-
geous views.
Riel believed that on December 8,
1875,the Holy Spirit authorized him
both to save the métis and to reform the
Catholic Church.He believed the métis
were the Chosen People(he said they
were descended from the Hebrews)and
he believed that under his guidance a
new branch of the Roman Catholic
Church would be formed, with its Holy
See at Montreal. When he died on the
gallows he believed that,like Jesus,he
would rise again on the third day.
Flanagan explains,in clear and care-
ful prose, that Riel's beliefs were typical
of the nativistic and millenarian reli-
gions that often appear among op-
pressed peoples. He puts them in rough-
ly the same class with those of the
Jehovah's Witnesses,the Seventh Day
Adventists,and the various Jewish
messiah movements that appeared in
eastern Europe during the nineteenth
century.
“The message”of Riel,says Flana-
gan,"was that a new era had dawned in
1876 when he began his prophetic
mission. It was the third and last epoch
of the Kingdom of God.Spiritual lead-
ership had passed from Rome to the
New World.Montreal would be the first
residence of the Holy Spirit in America,
followed after 457 years by St.Boni-
face.The métis would be redeemed
from their present state of oppression. | "Flanagan con-
tributes a fresh
point of view...
probably we will
always think dif-
ferently
