Though \nhe had taken off his school sweater and trailed it now from one hand, his grey shirt stuck to him and his hair was plastered to his forehead. All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat. He was clambering heavily among the creepers and broken trunks when a bird, a vision of red and yellow, flashed upwards with a witch-like cry; and this cry was echoed by another. \n“Hi!” it said.“Wait a minute!” \nThe undergrowth at the side of the scar was shaken and a multitude of raindrops fell pattering. \n“Wait a minute,” the voice said.“I got caught up.” \nThe fair boy stopped and jerked his stockings with an automatic gesture that made the jungle seem for a moment like the Home Counties. \nThe voice spoke again. \n“I can’t hardly move with all these creeper things.” \nThe owner of the voice came backing out of the undergrowth so that twigs scratched on a greasy wind-breaker. The naked crooks of his knees were plump, caught and scratched by thorns. He bent down, removed the thorns carefully, and turned around. He was shorter than the fair boy and very fat. He came forward, searching out safe lodgments for his feet, and then looked up through thick spectacles. \n2 W i l l i a m G o l d i n g \n“Where’s the man with the megaphone?”The fair boy shook his head. \n“This is an island. At least I think it’s an island. That’s a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there aren’t any grownups anywhere.” \nThe fat boy looked startled. \n“There was that pilot. But he wasn’t in the passenger cabin, he was up in front.” \nThe fair boy was peering at the reef through screwed-up eyes. \n“All them other kids,” the fat boy went on.“Some of them must have got out. They must have, mustn’t they?” \nThe fair boy began to pick his way as casually as possible toward the water. He tried to be offhand and not too obviously uninterested, but the fat boy hurried after him. \n“Aren’t there any grownups at all?” \n“I don’t think so.” \nThe fair boy said this solemnly; but then the delight of a realized ambition overcame him. In the middle of the scar he stood on his head and grinned at the reversed fat boy. \n“No grownups!” \nThe fat b","cbCaicK2cx5r7Z9I","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicK2cx5r7Z9I","pdf",2149633,189,"English","# Contents\n## One - THE SOUND OF THE SHELL\n## Two - FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN\n## Three - HUTS ON THE BEACH\n## Four - PAINTED FACES AND LONG HAIR\n## Five - BEAST FROM WATER\n## Six - BEAST FROM AIR\n## Seven - SHADOWS AND TALL TREES\n## Eight - GIFT FOR THE DARKNESS\n## Nine - A VIEW TO A DEATH\n## Ten - THE SHELL AND THE GLASSES\n## Eleven - CASTLE ROCK\n## Twelve - CRY OF THE HUNTERS","[{\"question\":\"The opening chapters establish what premise about the boys on the island?\",\"answer\":\"Stranded boys are trying to find one another and determine whether any adults survived, while the island environment and the plane’s crash create immediate tension and danger.\"},{\"question\":\"Who is Ralph introduced as in the early chapter?\",\"answer\":\"Ralph is a fair-haired boy who first comes into focus during the opening scene and begins interacting with another boy while moving toward the lagoon.\"},{\"question\":\"What details about the crash and adult survival are mentioned early on?\",\"answer\":\"The boys discuss a pilot and the wreck, including flames seen through the plane’s windows and the likelihood that the cabin was dragged out to sea by a storm.\"}]","Lord of the Flies - read online free | PDF",291]
