Lord Byron and Scandalous Celebrity explores Byron’s celebrity persona in the literary, social, political, and historical contexts of Regency Britain and post-Napoleonic Europe that produced it. Clara Tuite argues that the Byronic enigma that so compelled contemporary audiences – and provoked such controversy with its spectacular Romantic Satanism – can be understood by means of “scandalous celebrity,” a new form of ambivalent fame that mediates between notoriety and traditional forms of heroic renown. Examining Byron alongside contemporary figures including Caroline Lamb, Stendhal, Napoleon Bonaparte and Lord Castlereagh, Tuite illuminates the central role played by Byron in the literary, political, and sexual scandals that mark the Regency as a vital period of social transition and emergent celebrity culture. \nclara tuite is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne. She is the author of Romantic Austen: Sexual Politics and the Literary Canon (Cambridge, 2002); co-editor with Gillian Russell of Romantic Sociability: Social Networks and Literary Culture in Britain, 1770–1840 (Cambridge, 2002); and co-editor with Claudia L. Johnson of A Companion to Jane Austen (2009) . \ncambridge studies in romanticism \nFounding editor \nProfessor Marilyn Butler, University of Oxford \nGeneral editor \nProfessor James Chandler, University of Chicago \nEditorial board \nJohn Barrell, University of York Paul Hamilton, University of London Mary Jacobus, University of Cambridge Claudia Johnson, Princeton University Alan Liu, University of California, Santa Barbara Jerome McGann, University of Virginia David Simpson, University of California, Davis \nThis series aims to foster the best new work in one of the most challenging fields within English literary studies. From the early 1780s to the early 1830s, a formidable array of talented men and women took to literary composition, not just in poetry, which some of them famously transformed, but in many modes of writing. The expansion of publishing created new opportunities for writers, and the political stakes of what they wrote were raised again by what Wordsworth called those “great national events” that were “almost daily taking place”: the French Revolution, the Napoleonic and American wars, urbanization, industrialization, religious revival, an expanded empire abroad, and the reform movement at home. This was an enormous ambition, even when it pretended otherwise. The relations between science, philosophy, religion, and literature were reworked in texts such as Frankenstein and Biographia Literaria; gender relations in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and Don Juan; journalism by Cobbett and Hazlitt; poetic form, content, and style by the Lake School and the Cockney School. Outside Shakespeare studies, probably no body of writing has produced such a wealth of comment or done so much to shape the responses of modern criticism. This indeed is the period that saw the emergence of those notions of“literature” and of literary history, especially national literary history, on which modern scholarship in English has been founded. \nThe categories produced by Romanticism have also been challenged by recent historicist arguments. The task of the series is to engage both with a challenging corpus of Romantic writings and with the changing field of criticism they have helped to shape. As with other literary series published by Cambridge, this one will represent the work of both younger and more established scholars, on either side of the Atlantic and elsewhere. \nFor a complete list of titles published see end of book. \nLORD BYRON AND SCANDALOUS CELEBRITY \nCLARA TUITE \nUniversity Printing House, Cambridge CB2 8BS, United Kingdom \nCambridge University Pres","cbCaiqztN3dvhR5u","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqztN3dvhR5u","pdf",5877849,348,"English","# Contents\n## List of illustrations\n## Acknowledgments\n## List of abbreviations\n## Prologue: Proverbially notorious\n## Introduction: The meteor’s milieu\n## part i worldlings\n## 1 Caroline","[{\"question\":\"What is the main focus of the book?\",\"answer\":\"The book focuses on how Lord Byron’s celebrity persona emerged and functioned in literary, social, political, and historical contexts of Regency Britain and post-Napoleonic Europe.\"},{\"question\":\"What concept does Clara Tuite use to explain Byron’s fame?\",\"answer\":\"Clara Tuite explains Byron’s appeal through “scandalous celebrity,” a form of ambivalent fame that mediates between notoriety and traditional heroic renown.\"},{\"question\":\"Which other historical and literary figures are compared with Byron?\",\"answer\":\"The book examines Byron alongside Caroline Lamb, Stendhal, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Lord Castlereagh, among others.\"}]","Lord Byron and Scandalous Celebrity - Clara Tuite | PDF",1789942151,536]
