H. McCabe, S.J., focused on how Marygrove College education is grounded in the best American tradition through religion. The speech argues that religious formation makes education truly American and demonstrates this claim by drawing on early American educational theory, colonial decrees, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, and Washington’s Farewell Address. It presents religion, morality, and knowledge as essential supports for democratic governance and civic MARYGROVE COLLEGE LIBRARYPamphlet GollectionLOOKING FORWARD\n\n040 \nThe Baccalaureate AddressSaint Mary's CollegeNotre Dame \nHoly Cross,IndianaMay 30,1947 \nThe Very ReverendW.H.McCabe,S.J.President of Creighton University \nVol.XIIINumber 3 \n# Looking Forward\n\nTHE VERY REVEREND W.H.McCABE,S.J. \nI should wish today to make the grad-uates of this college very vividly awareof two things:first, that their educationhere has been acquired in the best, theoriginal, the most American educationaltradition;and second, that,as a conse-quence of that quality of their education, they can,if true to it,contribute some-thing particularly valuable to the Ameri-can life into which they move from thiscollege. \nThere are many reasons why the grad-uate of this college should feel thankfulto God about the education she has had;and not the least among these reasons isthis:that her education has been madevital by religion, which makes it the mosttruly American education possible. \nThis needs demonstration. At firsthearing,it sounds like just the sort ofthing one might expect to hear on an oC-casion like this, when we Catholic edu-cators come together to give one anotherencouraging pats on the back, and tomake parents feel better about the ex- \npense to which they have gone to edu-cate their children in Catholic rather thanin state schools. To some ears,to saythat religion is part of education soundsquite un-American.Let us see.Perhapsthe truth is rather that Americans, longused to the preponderance of schoolsfrom which religion is excluded, have lostsight of the indisputable fact that thisvery exclusion is itself un-American. \nOn this question, approach any com-petent historian of early American edu-cational theory and practice. He knowsthe answer so well that your questionmay slightly bore him;as my treatmentof it here may bore those of my audiencewho know their early American educ-tional history. But ask your competentscholar, anyway, what was the originalauthentic American idea of education. He will quickly refer you to the Found-ers of the American nation, telling youbeforehand what you will learn fromthem about this matter:namely, that theonly sort of education which recommend-ed itself to them as the right kind ofeducation for Americans was an educa-tion based on religion;and that,unhesi-tating in this belief, they proceeded to \ndevelop an educational system guided byit from primary school to university. \nThe competent historian of early Am-erican education will take you back withhim, for example,to colonial days;andshow you a decree of the General Courtof the Massachusetts Bay Colony,in1654,where you may read that \nforasmuch as it greatly concerns the wel-fare of the country that the youth thereofbe educated not only in good literature, but in sound doctrine, \ntherefore \nin teaching, educating,or instructing ofyouth or children in college or the schools,(no persons might engage)that have mani-fested themselves unsound in the faith, orscandalous in their lives, and not givingdue satisfaction according to the rules ofChrist. \nThere is no doubt that for these earlycolonists, education was to be based onreligion. And your historian will tell youthat this was a general colonial tenet,cul-minating in the founding of some of ourgreatest universities in the same spirit. \nHe will lay before you next a well-known passage in the Northwest Ordin-ance of 1787,enacted by the Congress of \nthe Confederation\"for the Governmentof the Territory of the United StatesNorthwest of the Ohio River,\"and hewill show you in this document the origi-nal,authentic American idea of religionin education extended officially to the ex-panse of the growing nation. You willthere read that: \nReligion,morality,and knowledge, beingnecessary to good government and the hap-piness of mankind, schools and the meansof education shall be forever encouraged. \nThis,your historian will point out, meansreligion in the schools;it means that inthe mind of the Congress the school isas much the home of
