\n# Long-Term Reliability of the Wonderlic Personnel Test\n\nCarl B.Dodrill \nDepartment of Neurological Surgery,Harborview Medical CenterUniversity of Washington School of Medicine \nAs a brief measure of general intelligence, the Wonderlic Personnel Test has re-cently been shown to render IQ scores closely resembling the Wechsler AdultIntelligence Scale Full Scale IQ(WAIS FSIQ;Dodrill,1981).Long-term stabilityof the Wonderlic IQ has not yet been demonstrated, however.Thirty normaladults were administered both the Wonderlic and the WAIS on two occasions 5years apart.Test-retest reliability was .94 for the Wonderlic and.96 for the WAISFSIQ.The two tests were similar in terms of reliability of clinical classification, but the Wonderlic demonstrated fewer practice effects than the WAIS.The Won-derlic merits additional attention by clinical psychologists. \nto any particular group, this investigation is di-rected to this area of interest. \nThe Wonderlic Personnel Test is a brief test ofintelligence that has been used extensively in in-dustrial and organizational psychology(Won-derlic,1973).In a recent article(Dodrill,1981),it was demonstrated that Wonderlic raw scorescould be converted into IQ scores that fall within10 points of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence ScaleFull Scale IQ(WAIS FSIQ)90%of the time withnormal persons. In that study, the Wonderlic IQcorrelated.93 with the WAIS FSIQ.Furthermore, differences in age,sex,years\"of education, level ofintelligence, and emotional adjustment did nothave an adverse effect on the reproduction of theWAIS FSIQ by the Wonderlic. The study did notaddress the question of reliability or long-termstability of Wonderlic IQ scores. \n## Method\n\nIn 1976,57 adults(age 16 or over with no his-tory of neurological problems)had been individ-ually administered both the Wonderlic PersonnelTest(Form A)and the WAIS in connection witha large standardization study(Dodrill,1978).In1981,an average of 5.28 years later,30 of thesepeople were found and were readministered bothtests. Two others had died,24 had moved out ofthe state or could not be located, and in one casea subject could not complete the testing due topsychiatric problems and alcohol abuse. The sam-ple retested was not different from the originalgroup except that there were more males(n=21)than females (n=9).All subjects were Caucasian. At initial testing they averaged 33.07 years of age(SD=15.40;range of 17 to 69 years)and 10.83years of education(SD=2.63;range of 6 to 16years).Initial WAIS FSIQs ranged from 64 to 136.These people were contacted through a variety ofsources in the community, including schools, churches, and unemployment offices.Further-more,they did not come from any identified med-ical or psychiatric population. The intention of thesample was to broadly represent the communityin general. \nA review of the literature on the reliability ofthe Wonderlic as summarized in the manual(Wonderlic,1973)reveals test-retest reliability of.82 to .94,with the second testing immediatelyfollowing the first,split-half reliability of .88 to.94,and alternate-forms reliability of .87 to .99.All of these data were obtained on the basis ofrawscores rather than the IQ scores devised by Dodrill(1981).In addition, they were based on job ap-plicants who may or may not represent the pop-ulation at large.Of greatest interest to cliniciansis the long-term stability of the IQ scores,partic-ularly in comparison with a better known test suchas the WAIS.Using normal persons, not restricted \nEach subject was readministered the WAIS andthe Wonderlic(Form A)in random order.Won-derlic raw scores were converted into IQ scores, using the procedures devised by Dodrill (1981).
