Short o/Long o Sort- Either sort the words by short o/long \no patterns or the child can match the short o/long o pair (tot/tote) . \n2. Short o/Long o Matching-Match the words to the pictures. You can also use just the pictures to sort the words by vowel sound (either short o or long o sound) . \n3. Short o/Long o Flip a Word-Use the templates provided to change the short o words into long o words. Draw a picture to show the long o word. See pg. 6 of download for further directions. \n4. What’s the Missing Word? Read the sentence and write the missing word that makes sense. \n5. Write the Word- (could be used as an assessment tool) \nTerms of Use: This free printable was created for you to use at home with your child/students or with multiple children in a classroom/tutoring setting. Thank you! \n©2012 All Rights Reserved. \n[www.thisreadingmama.com](www.thisreadingmama.com) \nHow To: Short o/Long o (o_e) Sort \nDIRECTIONS: \n•Ahead of time, cut apart the word sort (or child can cut apart) . \n•Set up the headers (o & o_e) at the top and model how to sort words by these spelling patterns underneath. \n•After sorting, read through the words and discuss any unknown words. The pictures from pgs. 4-5 work well to demonstrate the meaning of words. \n•Read through the words one more time, emphasizing the sound that the \no makes in each column. \n•Ask the child if he notices anything about the o sounds? Then, ask if he notices anything about the spelling patterns in each column. (The o column just has a single o in each word & the o_e column has a silent eat the end) . \n•Let the child sort the words with support from you. \n•You can also sort the words by matching the short o word to the long \no word (such as tot/tote) . \nHere is how the sorts will look when finished: \no o_e OR not/note \nnot code cod/code \nrob tote rob/robe \nslop lobe slop/slope \ncon note con/cone \npop mope pop/pope \ncod slope lob/lobe \nlob cone mop/mope \nmop robe tot/tote \ntot pope \n©2012 All Rights Reserved. \n[www.thisreadingmama.co](www.thisreadingmama.com)[m](www.thisreadingmama.com) \nShort o/Long o (o_e) Sort \n\n| o | o e | Can you also match each short o/long o pair? |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| not | code | rob |\n| tote | slop | lobe |\n| con | note | pop |\n| mope | slope | cone |\n| robe | cod | lob |\n| mop | tot | pope |\n\n©2012 All Rights Reserved. \n[www.thisreadingmama.co](www.thisreadingmama.com)[m](www.thisreadingmama.com) \nShort o/Long o Matching \n\n| \u003Cbr>[www.thisreadingmama.com](www.thisreadingmama.com) | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| not | note | cod |\n| | | |\n| code | pop | pope |\n| | | |\n| slop | slope | tot |\n\n©2012 All Rights [Reserved. ](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com)[ www.thisreadingmama.co](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com)[m](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com) \nShort o/Long o Matching \n\n| | \u003Cbr>| |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| tote | rob | robe |\n| | \u003Cbr>| |\n| lob | lobe | con |\n| | \u003Cbr>| |\n| cone | mop | mope |\n\n©2012 All Rights [Reserved. ](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com)[ www.thisreadingmama.co](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com)[m](Reserved. www.thisreadingmama.com) \nFlip a Word Directions \nstaple Short o Word Cards here staple Paper for Pictures here \n| \u003Cbr>tot | e | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n\nWrite the short o words on the papers you stapled above. \nDraw pictures of the long o words on the papers you stapled above. \nDirections: \nAfter the papers are stapled into place, ask the child to write 6 of the short o words from the sort on the paper at the left side (example: tot) .
