The preface explains how to begin by viewing the skeleton of syllogistic logic, selecting specific pages for careful study, doing exercises, and avoiding reading ahead. It describes a second continuous reading that fills gaps, enabling mastery of terms, propositions, syllogisms, and special rules, before advancing to later chapters. suits his ownstyle. The following hints are for those who are teachingthemselves from this textbook. The book follows thenatural articulations of the subject-matter,and it can beread through solidly from beginning to end.For be-ginners,however,I recommend the selective reading, indicated below, which concentrates first on the outlinestructure or skeleton of syllogistic Logic, before going onto the complete, continuous reading. This plan of readingkeeps the structure of Logic steadily before the learner'seye;the details are seen in perspective, and the skeletonis gradually clothed with flesh and blood. \nThe plan would work out as follows:Glance throughthe first chapter and get the general notion.FromChapters II,III,IV,and V select pages I2-18,34-55,and 64-95 for slow, patient, and thorough study.Doexercises as you go along, your own or from those printedat the end of the chapter.Understand as you read, and do not read far ahead of what you have under-stood.From these selections you will learn enough aboutterms to understand the structure of the proposition, andenough about propositions to grasp the structure of thesyllogism, and enough about syllogisms to be able to provethe Special Rules of the Figures. When you can provethose rules with ease, you have grasped the outline structureand skeleton of syllogistic Logic. \nThat done,go back to Chapter I and read the wholebook continuously. The gaps will now close. The sections \nx \non the technical classifications of terms, and non-categoricalpropositions,etc.,omitted at the first reading, will nowcome easily to you,and you can pass on to the study of theMoods and Reduction, and thence to the more miscel-laneous contents of Chapters VII and VIII.Chapters IXand X point on to more advanced studies and should beleft for the last. \nMay reminiscence be permitted here and a piece ofpersonal experience?I taught myself Logic in my youthfrom a small old-fashioned manual. It was not writtenfor logicians, but for the non-specialized pass-man,andwithout unnecessary technicalities or trimmings it set outthe basic and timeless truths of traditional Logic, someknowledge of which is essential,in my opinion,to aconsciously correct and rational use of our mother-tongue. \nI found the subject dificult at first;it was not like anyof my school subjects;but when I had crossed the thres-hold,an inner door swung open.I took a step forwardin self-knowledge,and thought and speech became self-conscious.Like Molière's M.Jourdain who found thathe had long been speaking prose,I found that I had longbeen forming propositions.I said to myself,“Yes,Iform propositions when my tongue does more than wag.I form them out of terms.I say something about some-thing.Therefore I ought to be able,in serious talk,topin-point those two parts of my proposition.I ought toknow exactly what I am talking about, and exactly whatI am saying about it.”Soon inference, too, became self-conscious.From a child I had inferred and reasoned;now I began to do so wittingly, aware of the traps and thepitfalls, and aware of a norm and an ideal. \nIn lecturing on Logic to University men and women, over and over again I have seen the same door swing open, \nvii \nthe same step forward taken, the same marked develop-ment.The nerveless, juvenile letter written to the CollegeTutor twelve months previously, has now turned intoa logical,well-knit communication, its subject-matterthought out,its phrasing clear and conc","cbCaiv70zNCF94Rz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv70zNCF94Rz","pdf",8385587,226,"English","# PREFACE\n##
