It does so by following the work of a community artist, working as a kindergarten teacher, over 1 year. \nDesign/Approach/Methods: Through a narrative inquiry approach, which also includes studies of archival data and field notes, we analyze how local and personally experienced weather eventsimply what we call “cultures of exploration” in institutional practices. The epistemologies cross the specter of cultural–historical, pragmatic, and deep ecological philosophy. \nFindings: Through this study, we exemplify how experiencing weather is intertwined into pedagogical practices like habituating the body to cope with cold and wet weather, learning about danger in a wild natural landscape, and valuing species as a powerful practice. The descriptions exemplify “cultures of exploration” as a pedagogical approach. \nOriginality/Value: In this time of an increasing climate crisis on our planet, the value of our findings is to foreground new insights, awareness, and knowledge relevant to children; to early- \nCorresponding author: \nElin Eriksen Ødegaard, KINDknow Resercah Center, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Inndalsveien 28, 5063 Bergen, Norway. \nEmail: [eeo@hvl.no](eeo@hvl.no) \nCreative Commons Non Commercial CC BY-NC: This article is distributed under the terms of the Creative \nCommons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 License ([https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)) which permits non-commercial use, reproduction and distribution of the work without further permission provided the original work is attributed as specified on the SAGE and Open Access pages ([https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-at-sage](https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-at-sage)). \nchildhood education; and to life and societies at large. This article has the potential to show how weather events are intertwined with everyday institutional practices—as well as how children, through exploration, learn to cope with seasonal weather landscapes and local cultural adaptations. \nKeywords \nCultures of exploration, narrative inquiry, pedagogical practice, weather events, weather landscapes \nDate received: 12 June 2019; accepted: 7 November 2019 \nIntroduction and motivation \nThe aim of this inquiry is to point to possible new understandings and knowledge—relevant to children, to early-childhood education, and to life and societies at large—so that we can better care for, protect, and educate children in these times of increasing climate crisis. It is vital, in education, that we pay attention to the relationship between children and weather landscapes and increase our knowledge thereof. This will aid us to further plan for a sustainable future and to develop pedagogical approaches that aim toward cultures of sustainability (Siraj-Blatchford et al., 2016; Zhou et al., 2016) . \nThrough a narrative inquiry approach, we will bring attention to practices in which we can identify habits, experiences, and practices of what we will call “cultures of exploration.” The accounts and stories we share will show how weather events and weather landscapes can be experienced, and we wi","cbCait5bLLPecrmO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCait5bLLPecrmO","pdf",223642,"English","en",105,"# Abstract\n## Purpose\n## Design/Approach/Methods\n## Findings\n## Originality/Value\n# Introduction and motivation\n## Aim of the inquiry\n## Cultures of exploration in early years\n## Why the study matters","[{\"question\":\"What is the article’s main purpose regarding local weather landscapes?\",\"answer\":\"It describes and discusses what local weather landscapes mean to children and how weather implies exploration through bodily sensations and capabilities.\"},{\"question\":\"How was the study conducted?\",\"answer\":\"Using a narrative inquiry approach, supported by archival data and field notes, the authors follow a community artist working as a kindergarten teacher over one year.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of pedagogical practices does the study connect to experiencing weather?\",\"answer\":\"It shows weather experience intertwines with practices such as habituating the body to cold and wet weather, learning about danger in wild natural landscapes, and valuing species as a powerful practice.\"}]","Local Weather Events - Stories of Pedagogical Practice as Possible Cultures of Exploration | PDF",1792091923,{"code":4,"msg":80,"data":81},"ok",{"site_id":74,"language":73,"slug":82,"title":65,"keywords":83,"description":66,"schema_data":84,"social_meta":138,"head_meta":140,"extra_data":142,"updated_unix":143},"local-weather-events-stories-of-pedagogical-practice-as-possible-cultures-of-exploration","",{"@graph":85,"@context":137},[86,100,120],{"@type":87,"itemListElement":88},"BreadcrumbList",[89,93,95,98],{"item":90,"name":91,"@type":92,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":94,"name":9,"@type":92,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":96,"name":40,"@type":92,"position":97},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/",3,{"item":99,"name":65,"@type":92,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/local-weather-events-stories-of-pedagogical-practice-as-possible-cultures-of-exploration/601071/",{"url":99,"name":65,"@type":101,"image":102,"author":107,"headline":65,"publisher":109,"fileFormat":112,"inLanguage":73,"description":66,"dateModified":113,"datePublished":114,"encodingFormat":112,"isAccessibleForFree":115,"interactionStatistic":116},"DigitalDocument",{"url":103,"@type":104,"width":105,"height":106},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/local-weather-events-stories-of-pedagogical-practice-as-possible-cultures-of-exploration/601071.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":63,"@type":108},"Person",{"url":90,"name":110,"@type":111},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-18","2026-10-15",true,{"@type":117,"interactionType":118,"userInteractionCount":8},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":119},"ViewAction",{"@type":121,"mainEntity":122},"FAQPage",[123,129,133],{"name":124,"@type":125,"acceptedAnswer":126},"What is the article’s main purpose regarding local weather landscapes?","Question",{"text":127,"@type":128},"It describes and discusses what local weather landscapes mean to children and how weather implies exploration through bodily sensations and capabilities.","Answer",{"name":130,"@type":125,"acceptedAnswer":131},"How was the study conducted?",{"text":132,"@type":128},"Using a narrative inquiry approach, supported by archival data and field notes, the authors follow a community artist working as a kindergarten teacher over one year.",{"name":134,"@type":125,"acceptedAnswer":135},"What kinds of pedagogical practices does the study connect to experiencing weather?",{"text":136,"@type":128},"It shows weather experience intertwines with practices such as habituating the body to cold and wet weather, learning about danger in wild natural landscapes, and valuing species as a powerful practice.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":99,"og:type":139,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":110,"og:description":66},"article",{"robots":141,"canonical":99},"index,follow",{"doc_id":61,"site_id":74},1792295503]
