patientand surgeon, there is common assent.Among itsdisadvantages is the uncertainty of bringing the localanaesthetic into contact with the nerves carryingsensory impulses from the field of operation;and it istowards the removal of this uncertainty that our effortshere are largely directed. \nLocal anaesthesia has interested us for some years, but we confess that it has sometimes been difficult tolearn a particular technique from text-books.Wehave been impressed, however,by the comparativeease with which a considerable amount can be learntfrom watching masters of the art,and we feel that thosewho cannot do so can yet be given many of the advan-tages of the eye-witness if they are taught by a pictorialmethod.Accordingly it is our belief that there is aneed for a book, such as theonehere presented,in whichthe main instruction is conveyed by pictures instead ofby the written word. \nWe cannot speak too highly of Miss McLarty'senthusiastic and skilful co-operation.A venture ofthis sort must necessarily come to naught unlesssupported by an artist whose main aim is to conveyclearly the details of the authors'practice to the eye ofthe reader.Producing a book which largely\"saysit with pictures”is considerably more time-consumingthan writing it longhand, but we hope that the addi- \ntional effort will greatly shorten the time required bythe reader to acquire the technique of brachial plexusanaesthesia. \nOurthanks are dueto ProfessorT.B.Johnston,C.B.E.,Editor of\"Gray's Anatomy,\"and to Dr.Alice Carle-ton,Demonstrator in the Department of Anatomy inthe University of Oxford, for advice and for scrutinisingthe pictures. While maintaining a certain leniencytowards exactitude of detail, they have cast out ana-tomical beams likely to offend the fastidious eye. \nWe had considered enlarging the scope of thisbooklet and entitling it\"Local Anaesthesia for theUpper Extremity,\"but the wide variation in thedistribution of individual peripheral nerves as shownby Pollock,Guttmann, and Bremner Highet has madeus feel that the great majority of operations on the armand hand are performed more surely and equallysimply by injecting the brachial plexus than by relyingon the injections of one or more peripheral nerves \nIn a work of this sort there is bound to be somerepetition, but where it has occurred it has been eitherunavoidable,or deliberate in order to stress somefundamental point. \nWhen cocaine or procaine is injected into a sensorynerve, the loss of the sense of pain follows in the areasupplied by that nerve, although touch sense, andappreciation of heat and cold in the same area, maybe relatively unimpaired. The condition is thereforemore accurately
