As itisa single supply it eliminates the need foraduel power supply, thus simplifying design and basicapplication use. One drawback is that the single supplydoes not offera negative voltage supply. Due to thisthe output will not be-able togo below 0V otherwisethe waveform will cutoff also known as clipping. \nClipping happens when a wave hasn't reached the maxamplitude and stops ata point and stays constant caus -inga flat peak if you clip a sine wave. Clipping can oftenbe heard in audio amplifiers when the speaker distortssmall clipping percentages may go unnoticed to the earso bare this in mind when using a LM358 for an audiopre amplifier etc. \nIf you have small signals and need amore useful read -ing we could amplify it using theopamp, this is com -monly used in sensors. \nLets say we have a signal of 50mV and we want it tointerface with a Microcontroller or soon we need toamplify it till we get 5V this allows a small change of thesensor to have a big change on the Microcontrollersinput this means we have greater accuracy of datathat’s being sampled. \nSome of many Op-Amp applications: \n􀁸 Voltage Buffers \n􀁸 Wave form generators (square, sine, triangle) \n􀁸 Differentiatorsand Integrators \n􀁸 Low Pass and High pass Filters \n􀁸 Comparators \nFigure 1: LM358 Duel Op-Amp DIP 8 \nThe LM358 isa duel op-amp, meaning there’s twoop ampsinone IC. We will only work with one fornow. \nOne op amp consists of a Non-inverting input, in -verting input and output as you can see in Figure2 . \nFigure2 : Op-Amp Example \nThe + input represents non-inverting input, - input rep -resents inverting input and +V connects the positivepole of the power supply and –V connects to the nega -tive pole (GND) . Inverting means the opposite outputof the original input, therefor if you have 5V on the in -verting input and again of 0.5 v/v you will have 2.5V onthe output. \nFor non-inverting if you have 2.5V on the input andagain of 2 v/v you will have 5V on the output. \nSo howdowe calculate gain? Well gain is determinedby the Rf and Ri ratios. The resistor Rf forms a feedback loopandas one applies Ohms law andthe voltagedivider rule a set ratio of the output voltage will cancelout some of the input. Remember that an op-amp isadifferential amplifier, amplifying the difference be -tween the (-) inverting and (+) non-inverting inputs. \nFigure3: Non-Inverting Amplifier \nIn Figure 3 anon-inverting amplifier schematic hasbeen constructed, please note that R2 = Rf and R1 = Ri. \nWe will apply 49.5mV to the +Vin and our Rf = 1MΩand Ri = 10kΩ . \nTherefor we can calculate the output forthenon -inverting op=ampas follows. \nFigure4: Non-inverting Formula \nAv = 1 + ( Rf/Ri )Rf = Resistance Feedback ( Ω ) \nRi = Resistance Input ( Ω ) \nAv = Voltage Gain ( V/V ) : volts per volt \nNow since we know the values we can substitutethem into the formula to find the output voltage. \nAv = 1 + ( 1MΩ /10kΩ )Av = 1 + 100 \nAv = 101 \nFrom the equation we determined the gain will be \n101 v/v, meaning if we apply 1V tothe input wewill theoretically have 101V on the output. This istrue but itis not applicable asthe maximum supplyvoltage is 32V but we applying 49.5mV to the inputtherefor we can use the values calculated. \nVout = Av x VinVout = 101 x 49.5mV \nVout = 4.9995V \nSo using 49.5mV will give us 5V rounded off, wewill need to calculate the required voltage supplyto the op-amp. This voltage will be higher than themax output voltage you require due toa voltageloss in the op-amp. In the data sheet it will benamed Voltage Swing use the typical value in thiscase its 5mV which is neglect able but some op -amps are 1.5V so you would need 6.5V Vcc. \nFora single supply op amp the inverting layout is rarelyused duetothe absence of a negative supply rail. Alt -hough the inverting layout can be used the th","cbCailAUHyDEwMOb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailAUHyDEwMOb","pdf",927366,"English","# Overview\n## Single-supply behavior and clipping\n## Gain and non-inverting amplifier\n## Inverting amplifier and AC coupling\n## Common applications and useful tips","[{\"question\":\"Why does a single-supply LM358 not go below 0V, and what is the effect?\",\"answer\":\"Single-supply operation removes the negative voltage rail, so the output cannot go below 0V.
