The little family rushes through a forest, fleeing the Greek city of Sparta. It is night, and a fire breaks out around them as they run. They find themselves in a race against time as nearby treetops burst into flame. Finally, they reach a place of safety. The mother ’s hair is burned, her dress charred. Her son is crying but unharmed. Her husband looks around, his eyes betraying his fear and a pained sense of regret: it was his fault that they were in danger. His wife and child hadn’t been forced to join him in exile. She had chosen to stay with him and keep the family together. At least they had escaped. Is this what her life was supposed to be like, the woman wondered. Wasn’t she born for more than this?  \nOur story of Livia begins in medias res. As a teenager and new mother, Livia went into voluntary exile with her husband, bringing their toddler Tiberius along with her. The early-second-century CE biographer Suetonius gives us an image of Livia as a young mother in distress, far from home and in uncertain circumstances.1 She had no way of knowing that she would return to Rome and capture the eye of Julius Caesar ’s adopted son, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, known as Octavian.
