Hansel outwits the plan with a trail of pebbles, but the witch’s house made of gingerbread and candy traps them next. BOSWELLLittle TreasuryStories ·Poems·Rhymes \nTreasury \nHILDA BOSWELLLittle TreasuryStories·Poems·Rhymes \nORANGETreasury \nn the edge of a forest lived a \nwoodcutter with his two children.Theirnames were Hansel and Gretel. For a longtime the children were very happy.Theywould go off with their father in the earlymorning and stay near him while he worked. They kept themselves busy gathering berriesand nuts and mushrooms, and Gretel wouldpick bunches of wild flowers. \nBut everything changed when their fathermarried again, for their stepmother turned outto be a cruel woman who hated the children. \n\"There are too many mouths to feed,\"shecomplained to her husband.“What a quantityof food these children eat,and us so poor!Itell you,we must get rid of them.” \nThis made the woodcutter very uneasy. \nNevertheless,the stepmother nagged himuntil one night, when Hansel lay awake inbed,he heard his father agree to take thechildren into the forest and leave them there. \nNext morning, before the grown-ups wereawake,Hansel crept outside and filled hispockets with pebbles. When they had had \nsome breakfast, their father took them into theforest, farther than ever before.\"Wait for mehere,\"he said. \nHe lit a fire of brushwood to keep themwarm and then sadly turned his back on them. \nWhen it grew dark,Hansel said:\"Father willnot come back, but I have left a trail ofpebbles and we can find our own way.” \nAs soon as the moon came up,the littlewhite pebbles shone like stars and led themall the way home to their father's cottage. \nNo one could have been more surprisedthan the stepmother. \nThat night,Hansel heard her say to theirfather:\"I will not have it!You must take themdeeper into the forest this time.” \nSadly over-ruled by his wife, the woodcuttertook his children even farther into the forest.Unhappily,Hansel had not been able to gather-pebbles,for the stepmother had taken care tolock the cottage door.\"Do not worry,\" \nwhispered Hansel to Gretel.“I have crumbledthe bread I got for breakfast and havedropped it on the way.” \nBut there was no trail, for the birds hadflown down and eaten every crumb.Gretelbegan to cry,but Hansel said:\"Look!There issmoke rising above the trees. It may be awoodman's hut.\" \nThe children hurried through the trees andsoon found themselves in a little clearing. \nThere stood the strangest little house they hadever seen. Its walls were made of gingerbreadand its roof was made of cake, and all thewindows were made of barley sugar. \nSoon they were nibbling away at the littlehouse for they were very hungry.Hansel \n.broke off a piece of the roof and Gretel brokeoff a piece of the window. \nThen out popped a little old woman.“Comein,my dears!”she said in the friendliest voice. \nThe old woman made a delicious meal forthem, and when they had eaten their fill, sheled them upstairs where there were two littlebeds. What a kind old woman she seemed tobe! But,dear me!she was really a mostwicked witch. \nNext morning when Gretel woke up,Hanselwas gone.“Where is my brother?”she askedthe old woman, but all the reply she got was: \n\"Fetch some firewood! The oven must bekept hot.” \nWhen she was fetching the wood,Gretelfound Hansel locked in the chicken-house. \n\"You must find a way to save me,\"criedHansel,\"for she plans to cook and eat me!\" \nAnd this was exactly what she meant to do,and she had chosen Hansel because he wasbigger and plumper. \nAll day long Gretel carried in wood and thewitch piled it on to the fire until the littlekitchen was as hot as hot could be. \nEvery time she passed the chicken-house,Gretel would whisper to Hansel;\"Do notworry,Hansel,I will think of a way to saveyou!” \n“Surely the oven must be hot enough now,”said the witch impatiently.\"Put your head inand tell me if it is hot enough,\"she said toGretel. \n\"Not yet,\"said Gretel. \nThe witch put on more wood and toldGretel to test it again.\"Is it hot enoughnow?”she asked. \n\"Not yet,\"said Gretel. \n\"Silly goose!”said the witch.\"It must behot enough!I will test it","cbCaikdtgdb1EsTw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikdtgdb1EsTw","pdf",2865572,52,"English","#
