allnations seek to breathe the air of independence,an atmosphere thatwill allow them to act as complete human beings. \nThose who have broken the bonds of slavery are free to choosetheir religion, their politics, their work. For them, there is choicein the style of home they want to live in,the mode of dress theywill wear, the type of food they will eat. \nWho are these free people? Are they the ones whose beliefsnever sway from the popular because of fear? Are they the womenwhose styles could never be contrary to those of Paris? Are theythe men whose cars are status symbols rather than needs? Are theythe girls who are tied to the acceptance of people because of appear-ance rather than character? Are they the boys whose strength isonly as great as the group with which they associate? These peopleare hardly free.Their freedom is a label,a Fourth of July song,aonce-a-year exhibition.Although they live in a tradition of free-dom and they zealously guard their legal rights, they have forfeitedthe freedom of individuality. \nMillions have obtained freedom only to let themselves becomeensnared in another type of bondage.Today's silent cry may wellbe the desire to overcome the shackles of a self-inflicted socialslavery. It is the desire to assert a unique personality that will bepart of a diverse society, not a stereotype overcome by a rigidsociety. \nFreedom takes courage. The freedoms previously earned tookthe courage of guns, troops and a united spirit. The freedom to beachieved will take the courage of belief, purpose and individuality. \n—M.T. \nMan is own freedom, and aware at the same time of hiscapacity to consecrate that freedom entirely to the purpose forwhich it was given him. \n—Thomas Merton in The New Man \n# 3itst Steps\n\nBeth Ann
