Your mother tells you not to trust your father. They argue. You wonder: Who can I trust?  \nBefore dawn one day you hear your mother screaming. You feel terrible. Your parents don’t talk to eachother. You feel that their trouble is all your fault. You can’t do anything about it. You feel that you’re useless.  \nThey get a divorce. The court says you can decide which parent you can live with. Should you...  \n-Try to get your parents to go back together again.  \n-Find a close relative or friend who will take time with you. Plan a visit. Tell them about the last thing that happened and how terrible you feel about yourself.  \n-Stay in school as long as you can, even though your mind is mixed up. Look for a school counselor who will listen to your family’s story.  \n-THINK AHEAD: Where will you be more at home? With your father or with your mother? Which one do you trust more? Your old home is gone. Try as much as you can to understand how each parent feels. Stay with one. Just visit the other.  \n-Go live with a friend or relative. Try to get into a different school. Say nothing to your parents. Let them manage their own things without you. Later, if possible, help them to be friends.  \nYOU DECIDE!  \n2. You grow up in a town called Sleepyville. It is quiet there. The police have very little to do because no one uses drugs. If students fight, the teachers take time to make peace. There are no gangs. Liquor is very rare. On the main street, shopkeepers greet each other every day. They seem happy.  \nBut: Every day the City Council knows exactly who or what comes into their town and who or what goes out... And when. There are two strong families. They take turns ruling the town.  \nWhatever the Council wants, gets done. If some people want to hear a speaker, they must ask the Council’s permission. The Council chooses the principals and books for the schools. There are a few meetings for everyone. But important meetings are short. By the time most people get to the meeting, the decisions are already made.  \nThere have been almost no changes of any kind for the last 100 years. As you grow older, you decide that“Sleepyville” is a good name for your town. Its leaders want all people to close their eyes and sleep. Then they can do what they want.  \nThe Highway Department of your county decides to build a road. Officials come like gentlemen and ask permission to go through the town. They bring maps and careful notes. The Council refuses. You think this is wrong. You believe that your town is asleep and that the road will bring in good changes.  \nWhat should you do?  \n-Go to the Highway Department and learn more about their plans.  \n-Find some old people and hear what they think about the road and the town’s history. Spend some time in your town library or high school. Study newspapers and magazines.  \n-Talk to people who think the government is too powerful.  \n-Write a list of reasons that you think the new road would help the town.  \n-Go to a Council meeting. Listen and say just what needs to be said, nothing more. Tell them exactly how a new road will help their lives. Tell them how you feel.
