When strangers come, they bark. They bark so the people will know that others have come near their homes. But there was one night in the land of Egypt many years ago when the dogs did not bark like they usually did. Why was this?  \nIt was God who told the dogs when to keep quiet, and the dogs obeyed Him. He is a better trainer than any dog trainer in the world today. He told His friend Moses ahead of time what the dogs would do. He said to Moses,“That night no dogs will bark and leap at any of My people who believe in Me, but they will still bark and leap at the Egyptians. This is to show the difference between those who believe and obey meand those who do not believe and obey Me.”  \nFor many weeks before this, God had sent Moses to the ruler of Egypt, bringing him God’s message. The message from God was,“Let My people go.” When the ruler refused to obey God, then God sent many great disasters on the Egyptians, but these troubles never reached God’s people, the Hebrews. So it became clearer and clearer that God was punishing the Egyptians and sparing the Hebrews.  \nThe ruler of Egypt for years had been giving the Hebrews hard work to do, and he had been cruel to them in many other ways. Now God had decided to save His people, the Hebrews, and take them away from the land of Egypt. He gave Moses careful orders as to how the Hebrews should get ready, and then told him what night they should leave.  \nTo make the ruler of Egypt willing to let the Hebrews leave, God knew that He would have to punish all the Egyptians in a way they had never been punished before and never would be so punished again. He said to Moses,“I will send the Angel of Death to kill all the oldest sons of the Egyptians, but I will save all the oldest sons of you, my people. But you must, family by family, kill a lamb and place some of its blood on the top and sides of your front doors.  \n\"When My angel sees the blood, he will know you are Mine and will pass over you. Each lamb will be for a meal that night when I will pass over you. Be dressed and packed for your trip that night, with your shoes on. Eat standing up ready to go.” And Moses said,“We will.”  \nWhen the Passover night came, the Hebrews had all heard what God had planned, and they all prepared just as God had told them to do. How excited they were to think that God would protect their eldest sons, and that they all would be leaving Egypt. It was a happy night for the Hebrews, and their dogs were quiet and peaceful. But suddenly they began to hear shouts and crying and the barking of dogs from their Egyptian neighbors’ homes. Their eldest sons were dying.  \nWhat a sad night it was for those who had not believed or obeyed God. Because they had noticed before that the Hebrews had not suffered the pests and the sickness and the darkness which the Egyptians had, they soon learned that the Hebrews had also had their eldest sons spared from death.
