Some believe that great leaders are those who change our ideas about life. They believe that fighting and knowledge are what history is all about.  \nLibraries and the internet tell about thousands of such“great leaders” – Aristotle, Joan of Arc, George Washington, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse Tung (Mao Zedong) were a few. There are hundreds of other names.  \nBrave men have often wanted to stop wars. In 1917, one Kaiser (German ruler) tried unfairly to take moreland for his people. Americans and Europeans decided to stop him by a “war to end all wars.”  \nThere never has been a war to end all wars .  \nEurope and the United States fought a second “war to end all wars.” That “World War II” hurt almost all the people on earth. Enough bombs fell in one night to kill over 60,000 German people in a city named Dresden. In 1945, America made 2 bombs that killed over  \n200,000 Japanese in two days.  \nPeople now are fighting in Iraq and Aghanistan, Somalia and South America. Millions have died in African conflicts. There have been many other wars.  \nOur three men of peace never killed anyone. They were willing to suffer themselves in order not to cause suffering. They never used a sword or bomb. They hada different kind of power: love.  \nIn India,Mahatma Gandhi had no weapon. He had no army. But he turned over the British empire and kept its officials as friends. Almost 400 million people ran free.  \nIn the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr .  \nchanged some 350 years of North American history. He helped to bring better treatment for black people. He took many skills and ideas from Gandhi.  \nIn South Africa,Archbishop Desmond Tutu taught the whole world how two enemy groups could confess to each other and make peace. He started a new way for governments to work.  \nMahatma Gandhi- -South Africa and India  \nGandhi was a little man and probably weighed only 93 pounds. He may have caused the greatest miracle of the 20 th century. His birth name was Mohandas Karamchand. 400 million people knew him as“Mahatma.” The name means “great soul.” Mahatma Gandhi had more power in himself than any great army.  \nIn 1893, Mr. Gandhi traveled to South Africa. He was a young man and had completed a course in law. He told someone on a train that he was ready to be a lawyer. He was in a formal suit. He wanted to appear in a courtroom.  \nBut Mr. Gandhi was born in India and his skin was a bit brown. He didn’t know about brown people in South Africa.“There are no brown lawyers in South Africa,”a man said. He was angry.“You belong with the‘coloureds’ in third class. Get out!”  \nIn trains there, rich white people would sit in the first and second class sections. The seats were expensive and soft. Third class seats were cheap and hard. There was noise, much heat or cold, black smoke and dirt. People sat there who couldn't afford seats in first or second class.  \n“I have a first class ticket,” said Mr. Gandhi. He did not move. Another man came. Together they threw Gandhi out on the ground and the train left.  \nThis experience changed life for Mr.Gandhi. He had thought about Hindu and Christian teachings.
