You must keep the copyright and credits for authors, illustrators, etc.  \nHere are three men of courage. There are hundreds of stories about courage: in hospitals, in war, in rockets. Our Holy Bible is full of courage. We all know how Jesus stood up against Jewish leaders and Romans, and died in our place. Almost all the world knows about the courage of Jesus.  \nOur first man of courage was well known in his area. Once he was young and wealthy. He had lots of family and friends. But he chose a life of heat, disease and problems in a far-away land. He came to lead a large church.  \nThe second man of courage tried to bring the news of Jesus Christ to some violent Indians. They killed him, but a new little church was born.  \nThe third man of courage was told to stop preaching, by some people with power. They wanted to kill him. He trusted God and did not stop preaching. The Lord worked a miracle by protecting his life.  \nMen of courage do things even when they are afraid. They work even when they are tired and sick. They go ahead when other people want to hurt them or push them back. Some are well known. Some may never be known by anyone, except by God. Our three men have great stories.  \nAshbel Green Simonton came from an important North American family. His father was a doctor. That doctor had served in the U.S. Congress twice. An older brother had left home to help some churches in Brazil, South America. A sister married a missionary in Brazil. Young Ashbel wanted his life to be important, too.  \nAshbel Simonton taught children for a while. Then he thought he should become a lawyer. Friends and family thought he should be a minister. He listened to them. He decided to go to a special school. One of his teachers talked about preaching in another country. He became excited about that.  \nHe attended a revival (a special church meeting) . There, Mr. Simonton gave his life to Almighty God and His Son. He gave his life to serve in God’s kingdom in Brazil, South America.  \nMr. Simonton was going to the biggest country in South America. The time was the late 1880’s. There was no internet or jet travel.  \nBrazil has over 8 million square kilometers of land. It is about half as large as Russia and just a little smaller than the U.S.A. Many Brazilian people live in large cities close to the Atlantic Ocean. Some people in Brazil had come from Europe. They had money and power. Other people lived in the sertao, or backlands. They did not live like Europeans. They were very poor. They had their own ideas about music, love, and God.  \nStill other Brazilians lived near a huge river, the Amazon. Also there were African slaves. They had their own languages and stories.  \nBrazil was a land with four worlds. These worlds were: city, back country, Amazon, and African. Mr. Simonton wanted to bring the Lord Jesus to those four worlds.  \nLike any young North American, Ashbel Green had much to learn. He grew up in one kind of culture. He moved into a different kind. Portuguese and otherlanguages were different. Church friends were different. He had to think the way the Brazilians thought.  \nHere are some things that Mr. Simonton did:  \nAug. 12, 1859 – He arrived in Brazil. Brazilians consider this the date of the founding of their Protestant churches.
