So does prejudice. \"Prejudice\" means not liking people because of the color of their skin, or because of some other thing about them.  \nMany people want to change this; they want to stop war and prejudice. They want to stop selfishness and dishonesty. They want to bring an end to unfairness and suffering as much as they can.  \nA group of people from every country in the world often meets to talk over what they care about, and to decide what to do. The name of this group is the United Nations. In the year 1948, the United Nations agreed to a special paper about what is good and important. They wanted to stop prejudice, unfairness and unnecessary suffering.  \nPeople from 17 different countries, or nations, helped to write this paper. Those nations included Uruguay, Lebanon, China, France and Australia. The leader of the group of writers was Eleanor Roosevelt. the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States.  \nForty-eight countries agreed to this paper at first. Since then many other countries have agreed that it is good. Leaders and citizens all over the world think about this paper when they are deciding difficult questions. It helps them to know what is right and what is wrong.  \nThe name of this paper is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What do the words mean?  \nUniversal --relating to all people in the world Declaration--a public statement  \nHuman--concerning people: men, women, boys & girls Rights--the things a person should have or the wayshe should be treated  \nIs it important for a person to be kind to other people? Is it important for a government to be kind?  \nIs it important to let people believe what they want to and to let them speak out about what they believe?  \nIs it good for us to think of other people in the world as our brothers and sisters?  \nYes, all of these things are good, and all of them are important  \nWhen we forget these things, we sometimes do terrible actions to each other. Governments can do terrible actions. When we forget these things, whole nations can treat other nations in a very bad way. Or certain groups of people can treat certain other groups in a very bad way. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights helps to bring an end to these problems.  \nOne of the main ideas in the Declaration is dignity. That means that every person is worthy of respect; other people need to treat him or her with respect.  \nAnother main idea is liberty or freedom, being able to think or act as one wants to.  \nAnother is equality, that all people are worth the same, or they all have the same value.  \nThe fourth main idea is brotherhood. That means people join together in a spirit of friendliness, even if they are different or from different places.  \nThere are thirty \"articles\" or sections or parts in the Declaration. What do these articles talk about?  \nEQUALITY--Articles 1, 2, 3. Everyone should have the same rights as everyone else. The color of aperson's skin doesn't matter. It doesn't matter whether the person is a man or a woman. It doesn't matter how old he is, what he believes or where he comes from, or if he is rich or poor.  \nSLAVERY--Article 4.
