Teacher John Awote introduces a black umbrella brought from China and modified in Nairobi, turning its embroidered images into story prompts. Students choose pictures by counting fingers, then listen to tales linked to each scene, beginning with a proud, temperamental cheetah and the other animals’ teasing.","Literacy International: The Story Umbrella \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish Spiritual \nLiteracy International: The Story Umbrella \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2018, Literacy International \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. Then someone batted the ball so that it zoomed way off course and out of bounds. It landed in a thorn bush. \nThat was the end of the game, for this African school had only one volleyball. Not that it was lost. By the time a boy got the ball out, he shook his head and held the ball up. A thorn had pierced it. It was losing air fast, and soon it would be limp. The problem was that they didn’t have a bicycle pump handy. Evening was advancing, and they had no way to get the ball repaired before dark. \n“We won!” taunted the boys of the team which was ahead.“No, you didn’t!” shouted the other team.“You are the ones who hit the ball into the thorn bush.” \nThis argument might have continued if it had not been for the arrival of their popular teacher, John Awote. He got their attention by saying,“Boys, come on over to my house and get a drink of water. Both your teams have been improving a lot. I’m proud of you. Oh, and there is something I got when I went to Nairobi which I want to show you.” \nDropping their quarrel, they asked him,“What is it, Teacher? What is it?” \n“I can’t tell you yet,” he replied.“It is better if you see it before I explain it to you.” \nThey trooped across the open field, players as well as spectators, heading toward the line of teachers’apartments which were connected in one long row. They got their drinks from a cement tank, using a ladle. Then they squatted down expectantly facing Teacher John’s doorway. Some of them had wooden stools they carried with them to sit on. \nHe went in, and soon came back with a large, black umbrella.“This came all the way from China,” he said,“but a clever woman in Nairobi has added something to it which caught my eye. When I open it, you will see what I mean.” \nWith that, he opened the umbrella fully, and then he tipped it down so that they could see all of the top. It had a larger and smaller ring of figures embroidered on the cloth, and the students quickly moved forward to examine this unusual umbrella. \n“Why, it has animals on it... and birds... a hut, a pot, aladle,” they said as they pointed.“But, sir, what is this for?” \n“I suppose that the woman who did all this wanted to make it a beautiful sunshade,” Teacher replied,“but when I saw it, I saw another use for it. I would make a story for each picture on this umbrella. and then it would also be a story umbrella.
