No, that was the time when people settled down to sleep. He stretched himself and flapped his wings. He was well-fed at the grand house of the high priest in Jerusalem and had nothing to complain about. But what was this? Flaring torches lit the courtyard, and a crowd of men came in, then more, and still more. \nRed Rooster tried to rest and turned his back on all the activity that disturbed the night hours. It was cold, and someone lit a fire. Others crowded around it, warming their hands, but Red Rooster refused to watch. He couldn’t help hearing some high voices, but he didn’t understand what was going on. \nWhat had happened that night was that Jesus was arrested by the temple police on the orders of the high priest. Jesus surrendered quietly, but one of his disciples named Peter drew a sword and then clumsily cut off the ear of one of the high priest’s servants who had gone along. Jesus had taken the ear and put it back in place, and the servant had been instantly healed of his injury. \nNone of those who saw this dared tell the high priest, but the story was being whispered about in the courtyard.“What kind of man is this?” those who reported what had happened said to one another.“But if he has such power, why would he allow himself to betaken prisoner?” objected others. \nTwo of Jesus’ disciples were there in the courtyard because one of them named John was acquainted with the people who lived there. The other was Peter, the very one who had cut off the servant’s ear. Since it had been dark outside the city, he hoped that no one in the high priest’s employ had seen his face clearly. Otherwise he might find himself put in prison. \nJesus was being held upstairs, while Peter waited around below, wondering and waiting. After all, earlier he had told Jesus that he was willing to die defending him, but Jesus hadn’t thanked him for his loyalty. Infact, Jesus had told him that before this night was over and the roosters gave their wake-up call, he, Peter, would claim three times that he had nothing todo with Jesus and didn’t even know him. Peter was determined to show Jesus that He was wrong. He thought to himself how brave he, Peter, had been in daring to come along with John right into the high priest’s house! The rest of the disciples had fled and probably were hiding. Peter felt very proud of himself. \nAs the hours slowly passed and the news reached around the city, more and more people came to see what was happening to Jesus. Reports filtered downstairs that he was staying very calm and fearless. Not so with Peter. Once and then twice someone spoke to him, thinking he was one of Jesus’ disciples. And Peter each time quickly lied and said that he wasn’t. \nHe wasn’t very comfortable about what he had said but convinced himself this was a little bit of pretending which was necessary if he was to remain free to help Jesus. After all, he had been one of three who had been his special friends.
