After all, he had been a tax-collector before he became a disciple of Jesus. He knew how he had said to people,“Pay! Pay now!” He could remember how those disciples who were fishermen had laughed about this fish, which one of them named Peter had pulled out of the water.  \nThis had all started one day when Peter had come back to the Lord Jesus to tell Him that he had met  \ntax-collectors in the town of Capernaum. They knew that he was a follower of Jesus, so they asked him about Jesus, saying,“Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?” Peter had seen Jesus pay this tax, so he replied,“Yes, He does!” And the tax-collectors then said,“Well, we’re collecting it now, and He better pay up. And you, too! If you don’t have it right now, then go and get it.” Peter had no money, so he left them.  \nWhen Peter got back to where Jesus was, he was about to tell Jesus, but the Lord already knew all about what had happened on the street. Before Peter could speak, Jesus asked him a question. He said,“Peter, tell me what you think. Do kings take taxes from their own sons or just from other people?”  \nThat was easy to answer. Peter said,“Only from others.”  \n“That means that their sons don’t have to pay,” said Jesus. Now Peter had already told Jesus that he knew that He was the Son of the living God, so he understood that Jesus wouldn’t have to pay taxes. But now Peter was puzzled. Why did Jesus pay taxes anyway?  \nJesus knew what was going on in Peter’s mind. Recently Peter, along with James and John, had been with Jesus on a mountain top and saw Him in a blaze of glorious light, talking with two great friends of God: Moses and Elijah. Moses and Elijah had not lived on earth for many years, yet they were talking with Jesus and then disappeared. Peter had no doubt at all Who Jesus is. Peter had also seen Jesus do many wonderful miracles.  \nKnowing this, Jesus put Peter to a test. He said to Peter,“You wonder why I, being Who I am, pay earthly taxes. Even though not required of Me, I don’t want to offend people who don’t understand what you understand about Me. Now I’ll tell you what I want you to do: Go down to the lake and throw in your fishing line. You will only have to catch one fish.  \n\"Take that first fish and open its mouth, and you will find there the money that will pay both your tax and My tax. \"  \nHow surprised Peter was! The other disciples of Jesus were also surprised. Jesus was always doing unexpected things. This wasn’t the first time, but this was so strange. Peter didn’t hesitate, however. By now he knew better than that. If you were to follow Jesus, you obeyed His instructions. And if you did that, everything would turn out well.  \nAs Peter went down to the lake, he thought to himself,“My Master Jesus surely has a sense of humor. I have gone fishing for fish most of my life, but this is the first time I have gone fishing for tax money.” Peter was not alone.
