While he was proud of her good qualities, what he was chiefly proud about was that he had been smart enough to buy her. Here indeed was a donkey who knew her master and her master’s manger where she ate.“I feed her well, and she serves me well,”Balaam would say to his friends, beaming with satisfaction.  \nBalaam often made trips at the invitation of people who wanted him to get answers from God regarding problems they were worried about. And, of course, herode his favorite donkey on these trips. She was a good-looking animal, and he saw to it that her saddle blankets, saddle, and bridle were equally good-looking. Of course, he felt that he looked well, sitting in that saddle.  \nWhile Balaam respected God and did not dare go against God’s wishes, he was not one of those people whom God called His friends. God knew very well that Balaam had a problem with his own pride as well as his envy of those who had great possessions.  \nWhen the great King Balak asked for his help in talking to God and offered him precious gifts if he would do so, Balaam was much tempted to help this evil man instead of God’s people.  \nNow when princes came from King Balak trying to persuade Balaam to visit the king, Balaam’s compound was full of men and their riding animals. Balaam’s donkey looked and listened to these men and was not pleased. When it came time for them to leave, the donkey was glad to see them go.  \nThen Balaam came out with two servants, and they prepared to follow the princes back to Balak. He saddled his donkey and rode her off, with the two servants. God knew that Balaam was greedy for gifts and decided to send him a strong message by an angel. Balaam was used to hearing God’s voice, but this day God was going to do something different.  \nAs they went along, the donkey was the only one who saw God’s angel standing in the road with a sharp sword in his hand. She got the message God was sending, and without hesitating, turned off the road and into a field so they wouldn’t face this dangerous angel. Balaam, however, did not get the message. Not only was he not seeing God’s angel, but he did not ask himself,“Why is my donkey acting this way?”  \nNo. Balaam was angry that his daydreams of gifts from Balak had been disturbed by his donkey’s strange action. Some animals might go off a trail in order to munch some grass, but she never did that. He was puzzled and angry, so he beat her till she slowly edged back where they had been. By that time the angel had disappeared from her sight, so she wasn’t afraid to go forward. But then as they went up to a narrow place with walls on both sides protecting vineyards, the donkey saw the angel standing directly in front of them.  \nTo avoid him and his sword, this time the donkey tried to squeeze past on one side. But this pinched one of Balaam’s feet against a wall, and he cried out in pain.
