But it has given comfort, peace, direction and challenge to people everywhere.  \nGeorge Washington  \nQueen Victoria of England, Thomas Jefferson in the United States and hundreds of other leaders in Europe and America have believed that the Bible is important for personal life and for national life. The first president of the United States, George Washington, said,“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” The great English writer Charles Dickens said,“The New Testament is the best book the world has ever known or will  \nknow.”  \nMahatma Gandhi  \nSir Isaac Newton, the great scientist who made many important discoveries including the law of gravity, valued his New Testament and read it every day. Mahatma Gandhi in India, even though he did not profess to be a Christian, owned a New Testament. He studied its teachings, then by supreme discipline and love freed about 400 million of his own people. He freed them from one of the strongest empires in the world, without violence.  \nIn Africa, Ethiopian people claim that the Queen of Sheba was from their country. You can read about this in I Kings. They say that most of Ethiopia’s great leaders for hundreds of years since that time were descended from her and King Solomon. The Old Testament and the Ark of the Covenant it mentions are held in deep reverence in Ethiopia.  \nFor a long time, children studied the Bible in public schools in Europe and America. They still do in some countries including Uganda and Kenya. Even in Communist Poland in the 20th century, students were required to read the Bible in Catholic schools. Today millions of Christians in China use the Scriptures in their house churches.  \nTHE BIBLE CAME FROM GOD  \nWriters of the New Testament wrote down what they had seen with their own eyes. We know this because it says so in Luke 1:1-3, Acts 2:22, II Peter 1:16 and I John 1:3 . The New Testament writers believed with all their hearts that those things actually happened, even the resurrection of Jesus and the other miracles. They were so sure they had really happened that they were willing to die for their beliefs. All but one of the twelve disciples of Jesus were killed because of their faith in Him.  \nWe say that the Bible was “inspired.” II Timothy 3:16 says that all Scripture was “Godbreathed.” God inspired the material but He did not dictate it word for word. He used the personalities and writing styles of the different writers to make it more interesting, and to make different books sound different.  \nIt was written by people but it came from beyond them. It came from God. Even the prophets of the Old Testament did not fully understand the meaning of what they were writing, as we read in II Peter 1:21 . God understood, so He had them write it.  \nStill, the Scripture in its original form did not have any real mistakes. Jesus said in John 10:35 that Scripture cannot be broken. It is true forever. Paul said that the Gospel was revealed to him by Jesus and he was taught by the Holy Spirit.  \nPROPHECIES IN THE BIBLE  \nThe Bible contains many prophecies.
