It was beautiful. But now there is also evil and war.  \nMany people have other gods. They try to get ahead of people around them. They cry for alcohol or drugs. Some are happy only when they kill or control other men and women. Not everyone trusts our great and wonderful God.  \nFolomo Yakpawolo comes from a village in West Africa. Efrain Guadarrama comes from Mexico City. They meet at a big soccer match. Afternoon soccer games have been their joy since they were little boys playing on dirt fields. Now, in the big city with grown men and bright lights there is this big match. They love the game and talk about it. They watch every move. They learn that their homes and languages are very different. But they both have played soccer for years.  \nAfter awhile, they become good friends. They are like young people anywhere. They think about jobs and girls. Games are the only “war” they know. They would never think about a War between God and Satan. They don’t believe in either God or Satan.  \nHear them talk:  \nFolomo: “There’s no work in our village. Our children are just too sick. They cry and people get sour like old fruit. We can’t pay for a sorcerer.”  \nEfrain: “Why do you spend money on a sorcerer?”  \nFolomo: “Sorcerers have power over the spirits. Some of them know more than modern doctors. They can help you control people. They are very strong, but they cost a lot.”  \nEfrain: “Where I live, we drink alcohol. We forget our problems. We don’t have to pay a sorcerer. We just buy our drinks and pay the cashier. I’ll get some drinks for us. We’ll have good laughs.”  \nFolomo: “NO! Thank you. I don’t see any joke in all this.”  \nEfrain: (Slowly and not smiling)“What about your‘spirits’ anyway? Are they dead people? Do they make farms or does the Devil give them food? Can they really change things? I never saw one. Did you ever see one, really?”  \nFolomo: “No-o-o. They don’t show themselves, but you can see what they do. Last month nine people died in our village. Nobody will say why. I know those nine people weren’t just sick.”  \n“Before the people died, some men cut down a big tree. It was close to our house. It was tall and so beautiful. Old people used to feed the ancestors there. The spirits are probably angry now. I don’t know if our home is safe.”  \nEfrain: (laughing)“Get your witch doctor to drive them away. Go talk to your village chief.”  \nFolomo: “No, I don’t think our old chief has enough power now. Yesterday I was too stupid. I dropped some hair and fingernails on the ground. An old woman saw me. Her family has hated our family for along time. She gave me the Evil Eye... It made me shake. I was afraid she would use my fingernails and hair to make a magic spell against me.”  \nHe paused...“What kind of day did you have yesterday?”  \nEfrain: “Bad. I failed a big test. Now I can’t go to college. I like to read books about our earth and what people think about it. I love science and philosophy. I wanted to be a doctor but--no way now. I don’t have money to try the test again.
