She stopped often to take care of them. She would treat their sores, give medicine, or just say a kind word. That was long ago. But we still remember her today.  \nThis lady’s name was Florence Nightingale. Florence was born into a rich British family in the year 1820. At that time the family lived in Italy, but they soon moved back to England.  \nAs a young girl Florence was quiet. She preferred not to be the center of attention. But she had a strong will. She cared about people who were hurting. She showed kindness to the poor people who lived next to her parents’ property.  \nFlorence was a Christian and was in the Church of England all her life. Several times she felt God was speaking to her. When she was 16 years old, she felt He was telling her to spend her life serving others.  \nA few years later, she decided God wanted her to be a nurse. Her family did not agree. They wanted her to marry and be a wife and mother. People at that time thought nurses were just poor servants. Her parents sent her to other European countries to travel with friends. They hoped she would forget about nursing. But she did not.  \nFlorence’s father wanted her to have an education. He himself taught her German, French and Italian, and other subjects. Florence had a special talent for mathematics. She loved writing down information and putting it in order.  \nFlorence visited hospitals in Paris and Rome. In 1850, she went to Greece and Egypt. She believed then that God was speaking to her again. He told her to do good for His sake, even if no one else ever noticed it.  \nIn that same year, she visited a Lutheran mission in Germany. A pastor and some Christian women there were working for sick and poor people. She took four months of medical training with them. That was a turning point in her life. She knew then that she would become a nurse.  \nBack in London, Florence worked in a house for sick women. She had finally become a nurse. She had found her life work. Florence worked there for almost a year. Then her boss liked her work so much that he made her the Director of the house.  \nAs a young woman Florence was attractive and graceful. She often looked very serious, but she had a beautiful smile. One man wanted to marry her. He kept seeing her for nine years, but she said “No” to him. She thought marriage would keep her from her nursing.  \nThen came the “Crimean War,” in 1853. This was the time when Florence did her greatest work. It was what made her famous. Britain was fighting against Russia. They each wanted to own a piece of land called Crimea. It was part of what is now the country of Turkey. Many British soldiers were injured in the war. Many were dying.  \nThe British Secretary of War asked Florence for help. He asked her to gather a group of nurses for the sick and wounded soldiers. She brought together more than 30 nurses that she had trained. Together with Florence they went to the British base in Turkey. This was the first time women were allowed to serve with the British army.  \nThe hospital in Turkey was in terrible condition. It was crowded, dirty and bad-smelling.
