This country had a stormy time for about 30 years, starting in 1980. There were child soldiers, war and bloody changes from one government to another. There were diseases and poverty. Life was dark and difficult.  \nOne ray of light was Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She was elected President of Liberia in 2005. Mrs. Sirleaf brought peace, equality and hope.  \nEllen’s parents came from a poor rural area. Her father was the son of a chief. He was the first village Liberian ever to serve in the national legislature. Before that all the legislators were the more modern people. Like her father, Ellen surprised the Liberians. She started small, then she became President of the whole country.  \nEllen went to a school called the College of West Africa. When she graduated she gave a strong speech. She spoke about what was wrong with the government. At a young age she was already interested in politics. She was not afraid to speak the truth even if it got her into trouble. She was a Christian and went to a Methodist Church.  \nWhen Ellen was 17 years old, she married James Sirleaf. They were both interested in politics. The young couple traveled to the United States. She studied at a Business College there. Then they went back to Liberia. They had four sons. James worked in the Department of Agriculture. Ellen worked in the office of an auto repair shop to support the family. James drank too much alcohol. He was cruel to his wife and even hit her. Later they were divorced. Her suffering in the marriage made her a stronger woman. It prepared her to stand against the violence that came to her country later.  \nAfter the divorce Ellen was still interested in government work. She loved Liberia and wanted to do good things for her country. She returned to the United States for more study. She went to an Economics Institute in Colorado and to Harvard University. While in the United States she worked for the World Bank in Washington, D.C. After that she felt ready to go back to her own country.  \nEllen joined the Treasury Department of Liberia in  \n1975. Four years later she became the Minister of Finance. She saw that some government workers were using government money dishonestly. She made changes to stop this. The President at that time was William Tolbert.  \n1980 was a very sad year. The government leaders had been the modern Liberians for more than 130 years. A soldier named Samuel Doe was very angry about that. He came from a small village group and he wanted village people to lead the government. Mr. Doe killed President Tolbert and many other government leaders.  \nHe took power for himself. He put some of the leaders in prison. Mr. Doe told the people that he was very smart and he would make their lives much better. But he and his helpers had never done government work before. They were mean to the people. They kept too much money for themselves. Mr. Doe did not follow the Constitution of Liberia; he did whatever he wanted to do.  \nEllen Sirleaf was very unhappy about Samuel Doe. Her country was not safe. She left. She took bank jobs in the United States and Nairobi, Kenya.
