In the Old Testament, God spoke through Abraham, Moses, and many other Jews. In the New Testament He sent Jesus, a Jew, to be the Savior of the world. God greatly blessed the Jewish people.  \nBut for many hundreds of years the Jews have suffered. Many people hate them and treat them badly. In the 1940’s, Germans arrested and killed millions of Jews in Europe. The leader of Germany told them to. His name was Adolf Hitler. He was a very evil man. His followers were called Nazis (“Not-zees”) . This killing of Jews was called the Holocaust. The Nazis wanted to take over the world.  \nMany Christians, Muslims and others helped the Jews get away from the Nazis. A woman named  \nCorrie ten Boom did this. She lived in a town called Haarlem, in Holland. Holland (now called The Netherlands) is a small country on the west coast of Europe, next to Germany. Corrie and her family helped to save almost 800 lives.  \nCornelia ten Boom was born in 1892. All her life she was called “Corrie.” Her father was a jeweler and a watchmaker. Corrie learned to make watches herself. She was the first woman watchmaker in Holland. The watch shop was on the first floor of their house. The living space was on the second and third floors. The ten Boom house was open to anyone in need.  \nCorrie spent the first fifty years of her life living quietly with her father Casper and her sister Betsie. She started a club for teenage girls. She taught them how to sew and to do various other handwork. She told them about the love of Jesus.  \nAll of life changed when World War II started. In May 1940, German soldiers took over Holland. They tried to arrest all the Jews. They sent thousands of them to“concentration camps.” Other Jews had to leave Holland.  \nThe concentration camps were packed with people. The prisoners had to work very hard. They did not have enough food. Most of them became very, very thin. Many of them starved to death. Every few days some were shot and killed. Some prisoners were killed in other ways.  \nThe ten Booms belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church. People in their church believed that everyone is equal before God. They had a deep respect for Jews. They had plenty of extra space. In 1942, they began taking Jews into their house. They gave them food, money and a place to sleep. They also took in people who were trying to stop the Nazis. They were called“the Dutch underground.”  \nDuring 1943 and 1944 there were usually 6 or 7 extra people living in the ten Boom house. The watchmaker’s shop was a perfect place for hiding people. Customers were always coming in and going out. So no one wondered why so many people went through their door.  \nThe ten Booms built a secret room behind one bedroom wall. It was like a big closet. Six people could fit into it, but they had to stand up. There were small holes to let in air from the next room. Many Jews and“underground” workers heard about the secret room.  \nThey came to live with Corrie’s family. They knew that if Germans came looking for them, they could hide. If the Germans found them, it could mean death. Corrie’s family put a buzzer by the front door.
