Jesus answered this question with words for us all. Let John in the Bible tell the story.  \nSome people are talking near a temple. Here they are:  \n--A man sitting against a wall. He is “the blind beggar.” He has never had a job because he has never been able to see. He only knows what people tell him. They carry him or lead him by the hand. He has trusted other people all his life.  \n--The man’s parents. They raised him from when he was born. He has always been blind.  \n--Some men in turbans and jewels. In the Bible, they are “Pharisees.” They know hundreds of Jewish laws. They like to say who is right and who is wrong about God and the world. Many people are afraid of them.  \n--Jesus, a strong working man. A few people standing around Him.  \n--Other men and women farther away. They all know“the blind beggar” well.  \nLet’s listen to their conversation(It is on a “Sabbath”day):  \nPharisee (with unkind words to people around him):\"This beggar is always here when I pass by. He’s useless. He never does anything. He smells bad and he needs a bath. \"  \nWoman (looking around, with some anger): \"I brought him food yesterday. Couldn’t someone give him a piece of fish now?\"  \nPeople around Jesus: \"Why can’t that man see anything or do any work? Did he sin and make God angry? Or should we blame his parents? I’m sure the Pharisees over there have their answer. They love to talk about their laws and the people who can’t obey them. That’s all they ever do. \"  \nWoman: \"Can a boy or girl sin before being born? There’s no way! But anyway, I know that family. They’re good people. The parents did all they could. They loved him and kept him out of sin. \"  \nJesus: \"Who do we blame for all this? No one. The manis blind so we can all see how God works. I am working with God. But night is coming. No one will be able todo anything then. \"  \nHe doesn’t say what the coming “night” is. No one asks.  \nJesus quietly, to the blind man: \"Sir, please come over here. \"  \nThe blind man walks toward the sound of the voice. Then he stands still. Jesus spits on the ground and mixes up some mud. He puts it in the man’s eyes. Theman does not stop Him or ask what He is doing.  \nJesus then: \"Go. Wash your eyes in that pool over there. \"  \nThe “Blind” man goes to wash and comes back with water falling off him. \"I can see! I can see all around!  \nThat sky! Those trees! Everywhere! I love it!\"He jumps, waves his arms and shouts.  \nOne Pharisee: \"This ‘Jesus’ --he broke the Sabbath law. He healed that man. He worked on the Sabbath. Nobody should do that!\"  \nAnother Pharisee: \"He says He and God work together. He even said once that He and His Father are one. He should die for saying that! People here don’t understand our laws about God. They like what Jesus says. This isn’t good. The crowd is getting too big and the Romans will say we want to fight them. They will send their soldiers. We need to be careful. \"  \nThe “Sabbath” was a special day Ancient Hebrews believed that God built the world in six days. He rested on the seventh day. They said that people should rest then as well.
