Some older people share their best stories with their friends and family, or even write the stories down. That’s because some stories are too good to just be forgotten. \nThis is a collection of stories from a man who was a missionary in places all around the world... \nI remember our son when he was around eight, as we traveled by boat to Asia. We passengers ate with the officers, and one day the captain led our young son to meet the first mate, saying,“This is First Mate Alcorn.” Our son quietly shook the man’s hand and said,“I’m glad to meet you, First Mate Corn.”(He thought that the man’s first name was Al and his lastname was Corn. ) Then our son added,“You should be careful if you go into the kitchen or the cook might put you in the pot.” The small dining room rocked with laughter. \nI’ll never forget in one prayer meeting in a church when the pastor’s wife stood up to talk to us. She said,“I don’t often speak up, but the Lord is telling me to share a praise with you. My husband, as you know, has just returned from meetings in Brazil. When he flew to Brazil, you all so kindly paid for his ticket. But you did not know that when he went to buy his ticket, the price had gone up. \n\"He sadly took all our own money to pay the rest of the price. The only person I told about this was my sister. She then shared half of what she had for her own family, so my family would have vegetables and a little fish or meat. But she couldn’t share enough money for us to buy rice. \n\"Our rice bag only had one week’s supply of rice for meand our five children. However, during the six weeks that my husband was gone, our rice bag was never empty. When my husband got back and gave me some money for food, I went to the rice store, and they were surprised to see me. They said,“We thought you had moved away.” \nI think also of a friend who had a dream about Christ and accepted Jesus as his Savior. Later he told me his whole life story. After he accepted Jesus, he married and had two daughters. \nOne day during a famine (a lack of food in the country), he saw a woman starting to throw her baby son into the river. He quickly stopped her and offered to adopt the baby. She agreed, and he and his wife brought this child up as their own son. They raised him to know the Lord. \nOur lives are made richer by our own stories but also by the stories of other people. I still keep in touch with a woman in Texas, who I met when I was a young pastor one summer. There in Texas is where I held a revival meeting outside of town in a tent, and we baptized people in a nearby pond. \nOver the years this friend was a faithful helper to my wife and me in our missionary work. In her own words to us, she said,“I always saved my egg money for you (money she got for selling eggs), even when our house burned down. And when a weasel or a fox would try to kill my chickens, I would get out my gun and shoot it dead!” \nI ask older people to leave their stories for others after they are gone. This can be as simple as by writing the stories down, or recording the stories on a CD or a computer. Not long ago, I met a young missionary in the USA.
