He shouted to a student in his house,“Vallai say you mo’ come.”  \nIt was a summons from Vallai, the old Chief. The student, named James, left his work and followed the boy. Small children often carried big messages in the villages of his country. The boy led him into the Chief’s quarters.“You come here to teach us,” said the Chief.“Now I teach you. I want you to think. What two things are far away?”  \n“That’s easy,” thought the student.“The stars. But this old man won’t understand how far away they are. I don’t know how to tell him. I’ll tell him I don’t know.”  \n“Come on. You know,\" the Chief said. \"The first thing is the sky--isn’t it far away? And what about a person’s real feelings and plans? His gut. In our language we call that his gut. That is the second thing. Maybe a person is hiding something down inside him and a court can’t find it. He gets away. Then an innocent man goes to jail.”  \n“I showed you what two things are far away,” said the Chief.“Now you show me something. What two things are one?”  \nJames remembered a class. It was called chemistry. He had carefully mixed things together there. The things were usually very different, but they became one.“Village people don’t know what chemistry is,” he thought. He paused.  \n“Your country has too many divorces,” said Vallai suddenly.“Too many of our people are learning from them.” He quoted an old proverb, “‘Take time in life.’Most young people hurry around too much,” he said.“They don’t see much. They don’t look where they’re going. Most of them don’t really understand eachother. When I go to a big town, everybody runs here and there. People don’t greet each other. They can’t laugh. I forget everything and I want to come home.”  \n“So--What two things are one?”  \n“What about a man and a woman together in a good true marriage? Where nobody thinks about divorce?”said James.  \n“YES--You thought well,” said Vallai.“The man has a stronger body and he can do heavy work. But only the woman can let new life grow inside her. New life begins when their bodies come together. And a true marriage grows if the man and the woman trust eachother, talk over problems and have good times together. They are one.”  \n“But babies and children can’t grow if there’s no food or if the people fight. You’re right,” said James.“Divorce is terrible. The Lord says, ‘I hate divorce.’”  \nVallai leans forward: “Now tell me about the sky. I learned a few numbers in school when I was little. They tell me that a man walked on the moon. I say, Noway! How could that be? Show me.”  \n“God’s home in heaven is farther away than any of those stars,” said James.  \n“Oh? How far?” asked the Chief  \nJames takes out his Bible.“Look at Psalm 139 here,”he says.“King David tells the Lord,‘Your thoughts are like the grains of sand by the sea or in a desert. They are too many for me to understand.’”  \n“I like to think about the stars,” said James.“If you take a grain of sand and think of it as a mile or kilometer, then you have an idea ‘how far’.
