He is heard around the world because he has made it illegal for Americans to own slaves. He did several things:  \n--Gave the Emancipation Proclamation January 1, 1863-that slaves should be set free.  \n--Spoke his Gettysburg Address November 19, 1863-said that our country is split by terrible war. We must look ahead and set up a fair government.  \n--Helped to set up the 13th Amendment of the American Constitution: Slavery is against the law in our country-this was adopted on December 6, 1865.  \nSeven American states did not agree. They said they had “states’ rights.” They said they didn’t have to follow the law of the United States. They could make their own laws. They could have slaves if they wanted to.  \nThe states broke away from the country. They would not be part of the United Sates any more. Four other states joined them later. They became the“Confederacy.”  \nThe Civil War started then: Washington government against the Confederacy over the question of slavery... The war spread far to the west. Some Mexicans and Native Americans took part in it. Over 620,000 men died in the war. The killing started in 1861 and did not stop until 1865.  \nABRAHAM LINCOLN THE MAN  \nMr. Lincoln’s family were farmers. His home had one room and a dirt floor. He came from America’s“Midwest.”  \nWhen he was eight, he helped his father clear some land. He also played many boys’ games. He played to win. He knew what he wanted.  \nHe went to New Orleans twice. It was a big town about 1,200 miles away. He and some friends were taking farm produce by boat. They were planning to sell it in a market.  \nWhen they got there, they saw people selling men, women and children. These farm boys didn’t know they had entered a slave market. In that market, men, women, and children were like produce. They had their prices. The strongest men got the highest prices. We don’t know what these boys said to each other. We can guess.  \nTime passed. Mr. Lincoln kept busy. He taught himself how to survey land. He was a postmaster. He worked with a lawyer. He tried to win whenever he could.  \nHis parents wanted him to read. He read and read. He borrowed books and newspapers. He read stories, jokes, and some things from long ago. He studied the world and the life in it.  \nOne book says that Mr. Lincoln could see funny things anywhere. Fields, shops and offices could make him laugh. People loved his jokes and stories. He was about 6 feet 4 inches tall. Sometimes he wore a high hat. That made him even taller! No one could lose him in a crowd.  \nHe once saw a soldier who was actually taller than he was.“Friend,” he said,“Do you know when your feet are cold?”(His feet were so far away.)  \nHe was speaking to a crowd one day. A man told him that he was “two-faced.” He meant that Mr. Lincoln would promise one thing but then do something else. He would say what a group of people wanted to hear. Then he would say something different to another group, just to please them. This was not good.
