Through prayer and dialogue with God, the text explains the origin of suffering as human disobedience and rebellion. God connects creation’s groaning to scripture in Genesis and Romans, promising eventual freedom, hope, and the glory of God’s children through Jesus. The story closes with trust, longing, and reliance on the Spirit.","Literacy International: Nongodea Talks with God \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish Spiritual \nLiteracy International: Nongodea Talks with God \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2018, Literacy International \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. All was well, and Nongodea saw with satisfaction the return of his animals. \nBut then his neighbor, Ekaiee, came by his fireside, looking sad. He told Nongodea that one of his weaker goats had been killed and eaten that day by a fox.“Why did this happen to me?” Ekaiee asked. \nNongodea was silent for a little while before he replied. Then he said,“My friend, you ask a difficult question. You ask why. Now if you asked what or how, I could answer more quickly. Before I answer you, I must pray to the Lord God. If I were to speak by myself, and I thought of your loss, I might utter the words of anger. And those would be the words of a fool, for I have learned not to blame God.” \n“If you pray, do you mean that God then gives you his words?” asked Ekaiee. \n“Yes,” answered Nongodea,“He reminds me of the wonderful promises written in his Book. One promise written there is what Jesus, God’s Son and our Savior, says: ‘If you stay close to me, and my words stay close to you, you can ask me for the right kind of help about anything, And I will hear you and do it.’ (John 14:7)” \n“Well, please then ask God for me why I lost a goat today.” Ekaiee said. \n“You could do that yourself, but I will gladly ask God about it,” promised Nongodea.“I will see you tomorrow, my friend.” \nAfter Ekaiee returned to his hut, Nongodea stood still. Then he walked over by his camel enclosure with its camels. He looked up at the stars in the sky, so many and so bright. Then he began to talk with God. \n“Oh, God,” he said,“You made the stars, the moon, the sun. They work so well. They are always in their places. But can you tell me why the beautiful world you made has so many troubles?” \nAnd the voice of the Lord came to Nongodea in his mind and in the words of the Bible,“When I made the world and all things in it, I looked at everything, and it was good (Genesis 1:31) .” \nNongodea spoke in reply: “But tell me, Father in heaven, why did this change? Why do we have to endure the bite of the hunting spider, the fevers of the body, and the spears of our enemies?” \nAnd the Lord God said to Nongodea,“Think back on that last word you said. You answered your own question. Think a moment, my child!” \nNongodea thought, and then he remembered. The word which came back to him was,“Enemies enemies.” He stirred the sand with his foot, and he hung his head. \n“Tell me!” commanded the Lord God. \n“Enemies have spoiled your world,” whispered Nongodea. \n“And who were these enemies who spoiled my beautiful world?” insisted the Lord God. \n“The devil perhaps,” Nongodea suggested. \n“The devil is the evil prince of the air,” said God,“but he is not the one who ruined this world. Who was it that I put in charge of the world?” \n“Man,” answered Nongodea, for he knew what the Bible said.“Man gave names to all the birds and beasts. Then it was man who spoiled the world by his disobedience, wasn’t it?” \n“Yes,” said the Lord God.“You have said it, and you are right. It was my very own children, the sons and daughters of men, who turned into my enemies. They rebelled against me and spoiled this world.” \n“Do you mean that the mosquitos who bite, the flies
