Mountains rise very high above the land around them; they are higher and steeper than hills.  \nWhen people want to be close to God, many times they will go to a mountain. They want a quiet place away from other people and noise. There they can think and pray and hear God speak to them. They like to be in a place where the air is clear and where they can see fora long distance. The huge size and beauty of mountains, and their stillness, remind us of God.  \nJesus often went to a mountain to pray to His Father, as we read in:  \nMatthew 14:23; 17:1  \nMark 3:13, 6:46; 9:2  \nLuke 4:5; 6:12; 9:28  \nJohn 6:3, 15  \nWHAT IS A MOUNTAIN?  \nA mountain is a land form that stands much higher than everything around it. It may be a single peak, or it may be one of a group of peaks. A group of mountain peaks together is called a mountain range.  \nMuch of the earth's crust (outer covering) is made up of \"plates\" or rigid pieces of rock far under the ground. These plates move slowly. One plate may push itself against another, or fold into another. Sometimes two plates hit against each other and form into one. When these things happen the shape of the land will change. The crust is made of minerals and rocks. Much of the crust is covered by water, sand, soil and ice, but if you dig deep enough you will always hit rocks. Much of a mountain is made up of rock.  \nMountains can also be formed by volcanoes. A volcano is an opening on the surface of the earth that has hot liquid material coming out of it. This material is melted rock from inside the earth and it is called magma, or lava. Rocks, ashes, and hot gases may also come out. When these materials cool, they will build up the land higher and higher and in time they may form mountains. Many of the volcanoes in the world are\"active. \" That means that hot liquid materials are coming out of them or are likely to come out of them at any time. Many others are \"inactive,\" that is, they have not erupted for a long time and scientists think they will not erupt in the near future. To erupt means to have materials come out with great force.  \nMountains with sharp, jagged shapes were probably formed fairly recently. Rounded mountains are usually older, worn down through time by storms and avalanches, wind, water, and movement of rocks.  \nWHERE ARE THE MOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD?  \nWhen we talk about how high a mountain is, we measure the height of the top of it. We measure how many meters or feet it is above the level of the ocean, or \"sea level. \" This measure is called \"altitude. \"  \nPictured Above: Ana Dablan in Eastern Nepal  \nThe very highest mountains in the world are the Himalayan range in Nepal, some extending into India or China. The highest peak of all is Mount Everest, 8872 meters (29,108 feet) above sea level. Sometimes we shorten the word \"Mount\" to \"Mt,\" so we can write Mt.
