BE smart.” My grandfather didn’tread. Our village chief didn’t read. They had good lives. They were wise and we all loved them. They learned what they needed to know and it wasn’t in any book.  \nBetsy: Even so, their worlds were too small for us today.  \nJane: Prove it. I can learn from the TV and my friends. It’s more fun. Your brother can be in big trouble and your head might be in a book. You have to buy books, paper and pencils to study. People laugh at you. Reading takes money, time and energy. It’s forchildren. Adults have more to think about.  \nBetsy: How do you feel when your boy has homework and you can’t help him?  \nJane: Not so good. I send him back to his teacher.  \nBetsy: If she’s not there or if she’s sick--then what? Then you give up looking for her. You get angry. Then you say school is a waste. But... Do you want your son to go back in his head to the time of your grandfather?  \nJane: He’ll get too proud in school like some kids these days. They can’t learn anything.  \nBetsy: But YOU can learn.  \n* * * * *  \nBetsy has gone to high school in another town. She has thought about a lot of things.  \nBetsy: You know? I think there are two houses. (She smiles.)  \nJane: What?  \nBetsy: A big one and a small one. (She likes to make people think.) They both have doors. Think about it. Some doors are wide open. People inside learn many kinds of things. Other doors are almost shut. They open just for a few things. Some of these things are very small. Gossip or stale jokes... that’s it. Not much goes in. Not much comes out.  \nHave you seen a place like this? In a village hut there can even be animals. They walk in and out. The bugs love it. They love the trash too. The only time you can read or think is at night, if it’s quiet and the babies aren’t crying.  \nIn a big city apartment house the rooms may be crowded and small, with closed windows and doors. There is a lot of noise; there may be shooting.  \nThe big house with an open door, like a mind that is open to new things, is quieter. Newspapers, magazinesand books come in. People read how other people feelin love and war. You can learn how people lived years ago. People sit together, ask questions and talk about answers. Big things, not little things like gossip. A TV is there, and they sometimes check up on what it says.  \nJane: Who can afford a house like THAT?  \nBetsy: Some people can.They keep their house clean. They keep things working... and they don’t yell. People listen to each other. Bugs, chickens and animals don’t go inside.  \nJane: You’re a good friend. (She smiles.) But I would get lost in that house. I may not find which door to get out! What kind of place do YOU live in? Have you measured it? Is it big or small? What size is it? I guess your door is open? (She laughs.)  \n* * * * *  \nJane: I want you to show me why I should read. I’ve managed quite well without it.  \nBetsy: Okay. Two letters come. One is from a boyfriend. You miss him. Another one comes from a mission or government office. You really need to read those letters. But you can’t. You have to pay somebody or get a neighbor to read it for you. He maybe too curious.
