No book has been read by more men, women and children than the Bible. No book has been translated into more languages or taken to more parts of the world. No other book has made such a difference in people’s lives or in the events of history. The Holy Bible is the most interesting, the most powerful and the most wonderful book anywhere. It is known as “Scripture,” “a sacred book” and “the Word of God.”  \nMany Muslims appreciate the Old Testament prophets but they think that Christians teach that God has three parts (the Christian belief in the Trinity), and they cannot accept the idea. They say that Jesus could not have died on the cross because God is all-powerful and would not let that happen. So they say our Bible is corrupt.  \nEven before Jesus and Mohammed were born, the Hebrew Scriptures had some enemies. When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon captured the Jews in Jerusalem in 586 B.C. , he burned the city. He also burned the temple, their holy place. It is quite possible that many copies of, what is now, our Old Testament were destroyed then.  \nIn 167 B.C. , a strong man named Antiochus Epiphanes conquered the Jews. He stole many holy objects from the Temple and ordered that all the copies of their law (part of their Scripture) should be destroyed. But some of the Jewish leaders were in exile, living in Babylon far away from Jerusalem at that time. Ezra, Nehemiah and Ezekiel were there, and they had copies of the Scripture with them. There was also a Greek translation of the Old Testament known as the“Septuagint” in Egypt, and Antiochus did not take that away.  \nWhen King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon captured the Jews in Jerusalem in 58 B.C. , he burned the city. He also burned the Temple, their holy place. It is likely that many copies of what is now our Old Testament were destroyed then.  \nThe Romans in the early days of Christianity also tried to destroy the Scriptures. They were afraid the Christians would become too strong and take away power from their government. So they gathered up all the Bibles they could find and burned them in public.  \nThe Roman emperor, Titus, destroyed Jerusalem, the holy city of the Jews and Christians, in 70 A.D. As he did this, he destroyed many copies of the Jewish law. Later, other Roman emperors thought they had succeeded in destroying all the Old Testament and New Testament manuscripts. But many Christians and Jews secretly had copies and hid them away. The Bible was saved.  \nDuring the Middle Ages (the 5th century to the 15th century A.D.) some churches would not allow people to read the Bible for themselves. In some areas a layman could not even own one. The priests said that they alone could understand and explain the Bible. Those who disobeyed this rule had their Bibles taken away from them. They were punished and sometimes even killed. But the Bible has not disappeared. There has always been someone to hide it or to make more copies.  \nIn the 19th and 20th centuries, a new way of studying the Bible appeared. It is called “higher criticism.”Higher critics are scholars who have spent a long time studying the Bible.
