You will see very little life.  \n* * * * *  \nWinter came to a small village. It was very high in the mountains. The people got all their water from a river. They could drink and wash easily. In summer time the weather was cool and people would come up from hot deserts. They needed to rest.  \nBut one winter the river froze. It became like stone. There was no water for days. The people cried out for help.  \nOne young man didn’t cry. He found an old hand pump. Men had used it for gasoline years ago. He cleaned it. Then he made a hole in the ice and pushed the pump into it. He worked the handle and water came out. He found a tank and filled it. He asked some people to come and see.  \nHe wanted to borrow a truck and sell water.  \n“Oh, no. Don’t do that,” said an old man.“The Martinezes will never agree.”  \nThe Martinezes had a lot of power. He was afraid of them. Most of the village people were afraid of anything new. So the old man was cold, but he did nothing. The young man did not worry about the Martinezes. He was cold, too, but he did something. He thought about the cold, the gas pump and the ice. He worked and the village had water. He used his brain and his body. The old man stayed with his fear.  \nThere was a half man and there was a whole man. Which was which? Can you tell?  \n* * * * *  \nA reading class used to meet in a hot country. Many people were sick there. One woman was trying to help twelve students learn to read. They would not come to class regularly.  \nSome said,“We’re too sick and weak. This reading is too hard. We can’t remember all the things.” The teacher saw that. She thought,“They know where their friends’ houses are. I know where most of them live. They can remember those things.”  \nThe students would go visit their friends at class time. She knew that. She prayed for the friends. She asked the class,“Where was everybody last night?” Only four students had come.  \n“Some dogs ate my book,” one student said.“I couldn’t sleep after class last night. We had a storm and then the babies cried and cried. Then too many mosquitoes came.”  \nAnother one said,“I was just too tired to come.”  \nA third one said,“I know one person. He goes to see his girlfriend every two days. Sometimes he rides a bicycle. If he gets money, he’ll take a bus. There’s his bicycle.”  \n“Which is more important to him: the girlfriend or the class?” asked the teacher. She was angry. The students were like the old man in the mountains. They were half people. They let their books get beat up, torn or even lost. They didn’t really want to learn.  \nThe teacher had studied for a year away from home. It all looked like a waste.“That seat over there has only half a person in it when he’s here,” she said.“I know where the other half is.” There was laughter.“If dogs eat books, feed them. If there are too many mosquitoes, buy a net. If the place stinks after a storm, someone needs to buy spray, isn’t this so?
