You would not have fences or shelves or even pencils. You would have no wooden boxes or carts. Or if you had these things they would not be made of wood. They would be made out of metal or plastic or rope.  \nYou wouldn’t have any wood for starting fires. In many places, people cook their food over wood fires. Wood means life for them.  \nIt’s hard to think of life without wood. Wood comes from trees and most trees grow in forests. Forests are important for many people in the world. God made forests for us to enjoy. He made forests to give us many of the things we need.  \nWhat is a forest? It is a large area covered with trees and with other plants growing close to the ground. It might be a hundred meters long and a hundred meters wide, or it could be many thousands of kilometers long and many thousands of kilometers wide.  \nAbout one-third of the land in the world is covered with forest. The largest forests are in the country of Russia. Other large forests are in Indonesia, China, India and Australia. Much of the land in the United States and Canada is covered with forest.  \nIn South America, 1,300 different groups of people in Peru live in the forest! Brazil has the huge Amazon Forest in the east. In Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo has a very large rainforest. About 400,000 Pygmies live there. We find forests in almost every part of the world.  \nKINDS OF FORESTS  \nNot all forests look alike. There are several different kinds. Some of the different kinds are: Rainforests, Mangrove forests, and Boreal Forests.  \nA rainforest is a thick forest in a place of very heavy rainfall. Because of the heavy rain many, many trees and plants grow there, close together. Hundreds of different kinds of animals, birds and plants live in rainforests. Some of the plants contain material that can help make sick people well. Over 25% of medicines taken from nature have been discovered in rainforests.  \nTropical rainforests are near the equator. They are in the warmest parts of the world. Asia, Africa, Central America and the islands of the Pacific Ocean have tropical rainforests. But the largest one of all is the Amazon Forest in South America. It covers most of the Amazon River basin, in Brazil, Peru, Colombia and several other countries.  \nIn the tropical rainforests there is warm weather all year round. The air is almost always moist and humid. A thick growth of leaves is on the trees and many plants grow closer to the ground. A covering of branches and leaves called a “canopy” grows high above the ground. This canopy protects the plants under it from heat. The sun is very strong.  \nTropical rainforests have more different kinds of trees than any other forest. More than half the kinds of plants and animals of the world live in the tropical rainforest.  \nBetween the tropics and the cold polar regions we find the temperate rainforests. They have warm, moist summers and mild winters. Temperate rainforests grow in western North America, New Zealand and other places.  \nA mangrove forest grows along seacoasts where saltwater has mixed with the soil. It has many kinds of trees with tangled roots growing above the ground.
