The story was called “The Great Stone Face.”  \nOnce there was a little boy. He lived near a tall mountain. There were many rocks there. Some of them were broken and scattered.  \nSome rocks on the side of the mountain looked like the face of a huge man. The man looked wise and kind.  \nYou couldn’t always see that face. You had to look from the correct place. The boy knew just where that place was. The boy’s name was Ernest.  \nThat face made him think about strong people. It made him think about good ways of doing things. It looked kind. Ernest felt that it knew about the whole world. Some village people believed that it made the sunlight gentle in their fields. Then their crops would grow better.  \nMany people believed that a special man would visit them one day. He would have a face like the face on the mountain. The village was small. This man would lead them to great things. He would make them famous.  \nThe “Face” looked over a beautiful valley. There were fields, trees, mountains and streams. Ernest worked in the fields.  \nMany people came in the summer. Several of them had lived there before, had gone away, and had comeback to rest. Village people gave each one a special name. The names told about how each person had lived. The names made some people laugh.  \nGathergold  \nOne man seemed to have a strange power. It didn’t matter whether he bought something or sold it. He always made money. People called him “Gathergold.”  \nMr. Gathergold went to different countries. He made clever bargains. Men and women in many places knew about him. They gave him gifts. One day he came back to the valley and built a very big house for himself. It was like the house of a king.  \nThe village people hoped to see the Great Stone Face in this man. He had the power to do great things with his money. He could help the world in so many ways. But he just got older and older. His skin did not look healthy. His eyes got small. They seemed to see gold and not people.  \nOne day some people in the valley were begging. Mr. Gathergold passed by. He threw them some small copper coins. People began to call him“Scattercopper” then. But they still hoped he would be like the Great Stone Face some day.  \n“This can’t be,” said Ernest. The Stone Face had become a kind of friend and teacher. It seemed to say,“Wait. That man does not have what you are looking for.”  \nMarkets changed and Mr. Gathergold’s money lost most of its value. More and more people forgot about him. Memories of him somehow drifted away. He died. Villagers made his home into a hotel.  \nErnest grew up and became a quiet young man. He lived simply. He worked in a store. He didn’t tell lies or try to fool people. He bought things carefully and sold them at fair prices. Everyone trusted him.  \nEvery day he would go look at the Face. He would go after work. Nobody blamed him or thought he was strange. They knew the Face was good for him.  \nMore years passed. Ernest began to read many books and poems about life. His ways and his words were wise. He kept on looking up at the mountain each day. He waited.
