When Amoit falls into the lake, Helpa rescues her first, then follows her curiosity to a tent where she later protects the family from thieves. The story emphasizes kindness, sharing, and caring for others, even when misunderstood.","Literacy International: Every Hippo Needs A Helper \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish Spiritual \nLiteracy International: Every Hippo Needs A Helper \nCopyright © 2018 Literacy International [info@LiteracyInternational.net](info@LiteracyInternational.net) \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2018, Literacy International \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. There are plenty of fish in the lake and birds flying overhead. Animals come down to the water to drink, and other animals live in the lake, among them the hippos. Much of the time the hippos spend floating in the water with just their heads and ears showing above the water. \nOne of these hippos was named Helpa by the other hippos because she was always saying,“How may I help you?” Helpa Hippo’s willingness to be a helper brought many of her herd to her for help. \nA young hippo would swim up and say,“Helpa, I’m hungry. Where could I find something for breakfast?” \nShe would smile a broad hippo smile and say,“Right around that point over there you will find some water lilies. They are delicious, I had some myself earlier this morning.” And when the hippo would paddle over to find the lilies, Helpa Hippo felt very satisfied. \nShe helped other animals, too. One day she saw an antelope dip its head down to drink just as a hunting leopard crept toward it through the tall grass.“Run!”called Helpa, and the antelope didn’t wait to ask questions. He leaped away and ran with huge jumps, making his escape from the leopard. Some days later he came back and thanked Helpa Hippo. \nNot all the animals were so thoughtful. A monkey mocked Helpa’s weight, calling out.“Hip, hip, hippo! You are a fatso!” Helpa paid no attention to him. She knew that even though she was big that she could also move very fast either in the water or on land if she needed to do so. \nThen there was a donkey who begrudged her eating grass near him. There was plenty for many more to share, but he was selfish. He jeered at Helpa, saying,“Ugly old hog! Why do you let people take your picture? Your face is so ugly it will break their cameras!” \nHelpa didn’t try to answer back. She knew that real beauty is in one’s heart. Instead of getting angry, she thought,“I wish someone would help that donkey to learn the beauty of sharing.” \nOne day Helpa Hippo was floating around, humming a happy tune. She was amused as she watched two girls trying to row a boat. They didn’t know how to use the oars, and the boat was going around in a circle. Suddenly she heard a cry and then a splash! One of the girls had fallen into the lake. Helpa started to the rescue and didn’t fail to note that a hungry crocodile was also swimming that way. She swam faster and got there first. Diving under the water, Helpa came up with the girl sprawled on her back--dripping wet, gasping for breath, but sensible enough to lie still. The other girl called from the boat,“Amoit, are you all right?” \n“Yes, yes,” she answered. Lifting her head up, she then said,“Thank you, Jesus!” And after a few moments she patted the hippo’s tough hide, saying,“And thank you, Hippo!” \nHelpa was thrilled. Slowly moving over beside the boat, she held steady while Amoit got into the boat. The two girls managed to get their boat back to the dock and soon were back on land. Amoit waved toward Helpa and walked away. \nHelpa was thinking,“What an unusual girl Amoit is! And I wonder who this Jesus is who is her friend. I’d like to learn more about her.” Helpa saw that instead of going","cbCaikuuA9RNemOP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikuuA9RNemOP","pdf",247646,15,"English","en",105,"# Helpa the Helper\n## Help in the Lake\n## Rescue and Friendship\n## Understanding Beauty and Sharing\n## Protecting the Tent","[{\"question\":\"Why did the other hippos name her Helpa?\",\"answer\":\"They named her Helpa because she was always asking, “How may I help you?” Her helpful nature drew others to her for support.\"},{\"question\":\"How did Helpa help when a leopard was approaching?\",\"answer\":\"Helpa warned the antelope to run, and the antelope escaped the hunting leopard by making huge jumps.\"},{\"question\":\"What did Helpa do after learning about Amoit’s tent?\",\"answer\":\"Helpa visited out of curiosity, then later patrolled the field at night and charged two men trying to steal pots and pans.\"}]",1784293979,23,{"code":4,"msg":29,"data":30},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":31,"title":13,"keywords":32,"description":14,"schema_data":33,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":26},"literacy-international-every-hippo-needs-a-helper-story","",{"@graph":34,"@context":84},[35,52,67],{"@type":36,"itemListElement":37},"BreadcrumbList",[38,42,46,49],{"item":39,"name":40,"@type":41,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":43,"name":44,"@type":41,"position":45},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":41,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":41,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literacy-international-every-hippo-needs-a-helper-story/90482/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":39,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-28","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":11},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"Why did the other hippos name her Helpa?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"They named her Helpa because she was always asking, “How may I help you?” Her helpful nature drew others to her for support.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"How did Helpa help when a leopard was approaching?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"Helpa warned the antelope to run, and the antelope escaped the hunting leopard by making huge jumps.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"What did Helpa do after learning about Amoit’s tent?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"Helpa visited out of curiosity, then later patrolled the field at night and charged two men trying to steal pots and pans.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":45,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
