They fight over a toy. Or one child has something to eat and the other child wants it. One may take it from the other. The children may even shout at each other. When we see boys and girls arguing this way, we try to stop them. We say they are being selfish.  \nAdults can be selfish, too. Do you sometimes see something another person has and you want it very, very much? That is called coveting. The thing belongs to someone else but you want it to belong to you.  \nThe Bible says,“You shall not covet”(Exodus 20:17) . It is one of the Ten Commandments. God gave these commandments to Moses, and Moses told them to the people of Israel. We still try to follow the Ten Commandments today. Christians and Jews and Muslims all over the world try to follow them. God wants us to obey these rules. He does not want us to covet.  \nA man named Jerry sees his friend Mike wearing a new watch. The watch is big and shiny. It’s easy to look at it quickly and see what time it is. Jerry wants to have that watch for himself. He wants it very, very much. He covets it.  \nA woman named Prabhu goes to the market. In one shop she sees a beautiful dress. It is made of silk and has pretty colors. She thinks it would look very good on her. Her favorite bracelets would match it. She knows it would cost too much but she cannot stop thinking about it. She covets it.  \nThe watch and the dress are things you can see and touch. Other things you might covet are shoes and other clothes, a bicycle, a sewing machine or even a house. You can see and touch all those things.  \nBut you can also covet things that you don’t see or feel with your hands. For example, a young man named Manuel is going to University. He has trouble with his studies and is not getting good grades. Another student named Jaime gets very good grades. The teacher praises Jaime in front of the whole class. He gives Jaime a special award.  \nManuel is jealous of Jaime. He wants to get good grades. He wants the teacher to praise him and give him an award. He wants it so much that he gets very upset. He is coveting.  \nYou might know a person who has many friends. Other people admire that person. They want to be like him or her. You want to have lots of friends, too. You want it so much that you start to have bad feelings toward that person. You get angry. You are coveting.  \nYou might covet the money a rich person has. Or the success your neighbor has in his business. You tried togo into business and you failed. You might covet the fame of a football star, or a governor or a president. You want to be famous, too.  \nYou may covet someone’s good looks. You may covet someone’s ability to sing, to draw or to show some other talent that you don’t have. You might covet another person’s strong or pleasant voice. You may covet a person’s ability to speak in front of other people.  \nIt’s all right to want some of these things.
