It grows in a dark and quiet place. It grows and makes very little sound. We may not know a new seed is in the earth. We may not know a new baby is beginning.  \nGod does the work. The baby is in the woman, and the woman is in the hand of God.  \nYet seeds and babies grow better if they have good food. And so God lets us work with Him.  \nFrom this work, and from the hand of God, comes the joy of a woman with child.  \nIt is fun for an older woman to tell a young pregnant woman what to do. Some older women like to talk about the hard times they had, so the young woman will be prepared for what will happen.  \nIn this way they may do some good, because older people often have seen more of life than young people. But they may do some harm, too. They may fill a young woman with fear.  \nSome people say you should do a certain thing, because “modern” people do it. Others do not want tobe “modern.” They say old people know best about everything.  \nMany people have wrong thoughts about babies. Some women used to make themselves smile all the time they were pregnant. This way they thought their babies would cry less when they were born.  \nWe now know that smiling during pregnancy has no effect, unless it makes the mother happier. A woman needs to know how her baby lives inside her. When she knows this, she can think for herself about what other people say.  \nPEOPLE SAY THESE THINGS: (WHAT DO YOU SAY?)  \n“Don’t lie in a hammock. Don’t stick your head in and out of a house. Your baby’s head will goin and out when you deliver.”  \n“Chicken eggs can give you good blood.”  \n“Don’t eat frogs or billy goat meat. Do you want your baby to jump too much? Do you want him to chase women? Always be careful about meat.”  \n“Don’t bathe at night. Evil spirits may go in the baby.”  \n“Put your head out of a house before going out. It may keep you from falling. A hammock is a good place to rest. You need rest.”  \n“Smile. Your baby will smile, too.”  \n“Leave every chicken egg alone. The chicken can curse you for eating her baby.”  \n“Delivery business is hard. Don’t cross your arms or legs. The baby will be tied up when you deliver.”  \nAll over the world, doctors and midwives have worked to make childbirth easier. When a doctor learns something new, he writes it down. Then other doctors read it. By this writing and reading, doctors and midwives in far places may work together, without ever seeing each other.  \nThey have used a kind of light that lets them see through parts of living bodies. They know much about what happens inside a pregnant woman. They can tell how babies grow.  \nThey know enough now to make childbirth much easier than it used to be. If mothers get good care before childbirth, most of them can expect to have a healthy baby. They can expect to have a normal childbirth, and be healthy themselves afterward.  \nThe mother can learn ways to help keep her baby well.
