While many of us are familiar with the traditional themes and tropes of “classic” 20th-c American Science Fiction, in this course we will explore visual and verbal Science Fiction narratives in broader global contexts as they appear in the forms of Japanese anime and manga (graphic novels / sequential comics), poetry and novels.  \nFor many centuries, human cultures have used “serious” science fiction as a mode of philosophical inquiry, cultural critique and future speculation as well as a popular form of entertainment. Anime and manga represent interesting variations of this ancient quest and present intriguing challenges to us as readers, interpreters and consumers of culture as well as creative contributors to it.  \nJust as “science” includes a wide range of ways to learn about the universe (through physics and technology, but also through the “natural sciences”of botany, zoology and ecology), so “science fiction”also involves narratives that engage the natural environment in all its various forms, living and nonliving. In this class we will study unique forms of “natural science fiction” that consider utopian and dystopian perspectives on our human relationships with each other, plants, animals, micro-organisms and the natural systems of our planetary home environment.  \nSome of the questions we will ponder together this semester include:  \n* What does it mean to be alive (“animated”) in nature? How do we as humans value or de-value the living and nonliving phenomena around us?  \n* Is nature dangerous? Do human beings help or harm the natural world? Do humans and nonhumans have equal rights?  \n* How may creative forms of storytelling help us imagine potential solutions to the complex dilemmas that arise between nature and human nature?  \n* Can we create fair, equitable and sustainable ecosystems and communities?  \nHow can we heal and help nature heal?  \n* SPECIAL NOTE:  \nWatch and Listen for announcements of EXTRA CREDIT opportunities that will include special EARTH DAY activities, extra anime viewing PLUS our famous Cosplay / Potluck Day (we hope, hope, hope!)  \n2  \nClass Format: primarily discussion (utilizing literary analysis and interpretation) with descriptive or informative mini-lectures providing historical and cultural background (from both the U.S. and Japan) . We will view full-length anime and selected episodes of television series. We will read Japanese SF manga, poetry, short stories and a famous novel all of which have influenced or inspired great anime. We will also read fan critiques and scholarly essays that offer artistic, cultural and literary-critical points of view.  \nCourse Objectives/ Student Learning Outcomes:  \nStudents will read, view and discuss a wide variety of visual and literary texts, demonstrating the ability to interpret and analyze themes and issues using various interdisciplinary methods, including aesthetic, historical, biographical and cross-cultural approaches.
