Lion, once feared and cruel, is trapped by a hunter’s trap and suffers from hunger, thirst, and pain until he is weak enough to accept help. Warthog refuses at first, then empathizes with Lion’s suffering and uses his strong tusks to free him. The story highlights justice, mercy, and the transformation from fear to friendship.","Lion and Warthog \nEnglish Story Book \nLion and Warthog \nWr iter : South Afr ican Folktale \nIllustr ation: Wiehan de Jager \nAdapted By: Judith Baker Refor maated for Bloom by: Kent Schr oeder [www.afr icanstorybook.or g](www.afr icanstorybook.or g)[ ](www.afr icanstorybook.or g)A Saide Initiative \nEnglish \nThis wor k is licensed under a Cr eative Commons Attr ibution (CC-BY) Ver sion 3.0 Unported Licence . \nDisclaimer : You ar e fr ee to download, copy, tr anslate or adapt this story and use the illustr ations as long as you attr ibute or cr edit the or iginal author /s and illustr ator /s . \nCopyr ight © 2015, Afr ican Storybook Initiative \nYou ar e fr ee to make commer cial use of this wor k. The trap got tighter and tighter around his leg everytime he pulled. \nLion grew tired and he felt more pain in his leg. \nFinally, he gave up. \nDays went past as Lion sat baking in the sun. He was hungry and thirsty and there was nobody to save him. \nHe became weaker and weaker . “I am going to die of hunger and thirst in this trap,” he thought to himself. \nOne morning, Lion heard a sound coming from the nearby bushes . He listened and looked closer . He saw Warthog walking with his wife and children, talking and laughing. \nThe Warthog family were going to the river to drink water and play in the mud before the sun got too hot. \n“Warthog! Please help me! Warthog!” cried Lion.“Please set me free from this trap,”pleaded Lion. \n“Never,” said Warthog.“You are a cruel animal. You will eat me and my family for breakfast if I set you free .” \n“I promise I will never do such a bad thing. We will be friends if you can set me free,”said Lion. \nWarthog felt sorry for Lion. “I do not like seeing you in such pain, thirsty and dying from \nhunger .” \nSo he pulled at the trap with his long strong tusks and released Lion. Warthog saved his new friend.","cbCaifWp0OqCZu84","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifWp0OqCZu84","pdf",10345957,2,22,"English","en",105,"# Lion and Warthog\n## Lion’s trap and suffering\n## Warthog refuses and then helps","[{\"question\":\"How does Warthog eventually help Lion?\",\"answer\":\"After hearing Lion’s cries and seeing his pain, Warthog pulls at the trap with his long strong tusks to release him.\"}]",1784293840,34,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":77,"head_meta":79,"extra_data":81,"updated_unix":27},"lion-and-warthog-english-story-book","",{"@graph":35,"@context":76},[36,52,67],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,46,49],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/lion-and-warthog-english-story-book/90465/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":40,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-28","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"How does Warthog eventually help Lion?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"After hearing Lion’s cries and seeing his pain, Warthog pulls at the trap with his long strong tusks to release him.","Answer","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":78,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":80,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":83},[84,87,91,95,100,105,110,115,120,123,127],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":85,"slug":86},90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":88,"show_sort_weight":89,"slug":90},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":92,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":96,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":101,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":102,"show_sort_weight":103,"slug":104},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":106,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":107,"show_sort_weight":108,"slug":109},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":111,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":112,"show_sort_weight":113,"slug":114},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":116,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":117,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":119},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":118,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":122},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":126},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":128,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":130},19,"General","general"]
