irresistibly.As it were,the world has waitedfor them.One of the most significant of these was ex-perienced in the last century;the achievement of equalrights for women.Today this equality is accepted,but itrequired a struggle of revolutionary proportions.Thisrevolution has altered the structure of society,with aresultant change in the Jewish community.  \nEverywhere this revolution has had its exponents.Inthe Anglo-Jewish sphere few personalities proved to beas characteristic and demonstrative of it as the HonourableMiss Lily H.Montagu.She holds a singular place whichshe has made her own through great perseverance anddevotion,as well as through the revolution which allowedwomen to identify themselves in new ways.Women at lastwere able to realize their mental potentialities.A will anda day could meet;one of those in whom the challenge ofthe new age was joined was Miss Montagu.She found herhour,and the hour found her.  \nSimultaneously with the revolution on behalfof women,another was in progress;that of the labouring people.There was produced one of those historic coincidences,which may reveal an historic law.The other revolutionalso changed the framework of human society everywhere,as well as,in great measure,the frame of reference for thehuman mind.Moving in different paces and philosophies,the two revolutions influenced each other and often cametogether in one person.Generally,one cannot penetrate  \nthe one revolution,historically and psychologically,with-out understanding the basis of the other.In the Jewishsphere,both revolutions had their special results.Socialresponsibility began to make an appeal to women no lessthan men.  \nIt was the mark of Miss Montagu's life and characterthat even in her early years,she understood the Jewishsocial task.She recognized the obligation,and she soughther own field of endeavour.Assisted by her wonderfulsister,Marian,she established a club for girls to providefor relaxation of body and mind.In itself this home hasmeant much to many throughout the years,but its realblessing has been in its spirit of Jewish social duty.Onlythose who,on a cold day when fuel was scarce,have seenMiss Montagu in her untiring daily effort,can be trulyaware of her genius.She never abandoned what she hadbegun;she never abdicated a task nor pushed it aside.  \nHer dedication came from a genuine religious nature.Miss Montagu grew up in a home where Judaism was areality.In two impressive little books,Miss Montagu hasdrawn a picture of her family and her home.One cannotunderstand her personality without knowing the firmground from which it stemmed.Her home was an Ortho-dox Jewish one,but Liberal Judaism appealed to her fromher early years.The new way of Judaism became the cer-tainty of her life,despite the opposition which it engen-dered in her home,although it was a very loyal opposition.Mutual profound respect and love between family anddaughter remained intact.When turning to Liberalism,Miss Montagu was not seeking convenience or an easierpath.She knew that there can never be a completely com-fortable Judaism.By virtue of her sincerely religiousnature,she asked
