\nNUMBER 44(Volume IV,No.8)254FEBRUARY 1972Copyright 1972 by The Wilson Associates \nLike ItorNot,Kubrick Connects \nby Robert and Gretchen Wilson \nThere is something worse than clubbing a helpless old tramptoo drunk to run, worse than slashing a buddy's wrist to provepower, worse than laying a whip across a Nazarene's back onthe road up Calvary, worse than crippling a man, tying him up,and raping his wife before his eyes.Yet it is something that canprevent each of these things as well as,possibly, political crises, social disintegration, crime and even war.It is a final solutionof which Adolf Eichmann never dreamed,a cure immeasurablyworse than the disease...and it is in our midst at this verymoment. \nIn ivory towers it is called the Behaviorist Approach;in psy-chiatric clinics it is known as Aversion Therapy. \nAnthony Burgess wrote a novel concerned with it,the basisfor Stanley Kubrick's latest film,A Clockwork Orange.Themovie contains the clubbing, slashing, whipping, crippling andraping mentioned above, and more-such as the suggestion thatmen have found other than religious inspiration from Biblereading,or that classical symphonic music might not be exclud-ed from investigations of violent atmospheres in various eras- \nStaniey Kubrick,in the foreground, rehearses A Clockwork Orangs's second scene \nyet it is not about, nor even against these barbarisms. In glowing color, unforgettable imagery and fascinating deep-focus,wide-angle photography the movie treads upon the huinane inorder to illuminate the human-not by example, but throughundeniable inference. \nTo this work,Kubrick has brought the paradox of Paths ofGlory's final scene, with its common denominator of music-stirred emotion after icy carnage;the strangely realistic washesof light and misanthropic caricatures of Dr.Strangelove;2001'sexperimentation with protracted shots and trust in audiences'power of concentration;and a theme stronger than all of thosebut the last (and even there Orange is of more immediate bene-fit to us). \nWhich isn't to say that Message is on your mind as Kubrickunreels his spatially curious, glistening images on the screen. No,he is out to capture your thought processes by appealingto your eye as he churns your stomach, and he starts with light.Almost,it appears,as a dare to his cameraman (John Alcott)and the processing lab,Kubrick shoots into his light sources,or \nBefore (above)and after (below)the \"Ludovico treatment\"一from dangerousness to docility \nremains at such distance from them that the film stock barelyregisters color contrasts-yet all the detail you could demandis most disturbingly there. \nA rape is not discreetly shadowed, hinted at by off-screennoises:it is done in full, flaring light with a surgical clarity asgruesome as it is anti-pornographic...and still it is nowherenear as crawly as when physicians actually appear on the scene:society's shamans, working for a frightened government,insert-ing clamps in the protagonist's eyes and stereo speakers in hisears as they straightjacket the opportunistic volunteer througha treatrnent which transforms him from an awful boy into a\"good\"subhuman. \nThe film is so unusual to look at,so dramatic in camera pos-ture,that Kubrick's contrast between what he shows and howhe shovs it is all the more startling.First time around,Orange'spolarities-the bravura of its technique and strident pessimismof its warning-are so overwhelming that one knows most ofits nuances are slipping by,observed but undigested...just asone finds it difficult to come to grips with Kubrick's humor-the slapstick which makes you laugh when you know you'llthink less of yourself for it. \nOn second visit, you're readier for the wild framework:Kub-rick's deliberate littie reference to his previous film as,during astroll through a boutique, the camera tracks backwards arounda curved corridor and ends up staring at the 2001 album on arecord rack(a delicious echo of the centrifugal \"exercise\"scene ubrick had to trim down, last time out).","cbCaisENHRPQ8Cq6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisENHRPQ8Cq6","pdf",4218187,"English","# Like
