with no electric-ity,watching his mother—adedicatedteacher-hunched over her lessonplans, her face lit only by the flicker-ing glow of candlelight. Those quietyet powerful moments left a lastingimprint,Lighting the path he would oneday follow. \n\"Those nights are still so vivid tome,\"he reflects.\"I was so little then, tagging along when she was postedto a rural school in Long that once lived ashunter-gatherers but later turned tofarming.① \nFar from the nearest city, the valleyis cut off from modern conveniences, reachable only by rough dirt roadsor small aircraft. For students andteachers.getting an education herehas never been easy. \n\"To get to the nearest town,we hadto ride in a 4x4 Hilux,\"Nazmi recalls.\"I remember the times we missed thepickup and had to wait by the side ofthe road for hours!\"He laughs, but thememory sticks with him. \nHe recalls watching teachers dowhatever it took to help their studentslearn, even with almost no resources. They createdfun,hands-onlessonstomake tough subjects easier to under-stand.Some even made their ownteaching tools—like using cement tocraft dumbbells for exercise or turn-ing everydayobjectsinto learning \nNazmi's mother spent years teach-ing in Long Semadoh and for a few of \nthose years,he lived there with her.Life was simple, but one thing he andhis siblings always looked forward towas the monthly package from theirfather,a contractor working in Bruneiat that time. \n\"We were so excited every timehis box arrived!”Nazmi says,grin-ning.\"He always packed my favouritemagazines,Gila-Gila and
