As per the census department of the year 2011, India’s population of 121 crore people, 5.6 crores werewidowed in which women outnumbering men by a long way. Among states in India, Kerala (6.7 %) and Tamil Nadu (6.4%) have a significant percentage of the population widowed. Marriage is a major social institution offering economic, social, and psychological benefits to one's life and thus promotes positive well-being. On the contradictory scenario widowhood makes people vulnerable to attain these benefits as one faces the loss of his/her life partner. Widowhood is majorly associated with the negative experiences individuals face in society , this has a long history starting from the cruelpractice of Sati to the discriminations, various stigma associated with them as ‘evil spirits’ to the recent denial of their property right of widow. With these above practices, it is not surprising that widows in long run have been identified as one ofthe most vulnerable groups of the population. Though ages pass and more evil practices were not actively practiced, there is still challenges that they face in the world. And this study indents to find the life satisfaction among widow and widower.  \nINTRODUCTION  \nWidowhood is tied with psychological challenges like depression, loneliness, fear about future, grief, in some cases complicated grief where individual suffer from not being able to accept the partner’s death etc. The experience of grief individually varies and the time individual take to recover from the loss also varies from person to person. In countries like India where many cultural and traditional practices are tied along with widow, and the restrictions they face and discriminations they face in day to day activities like being able to stand in front of a family functions to religious event to being able to support the family/ children. Their role in the society and the family changes after being widowed. Widowhood in men’s life is reported to be strongly associated with poor health, less social interaction, and greater need for household chore. Some study shows that widowhood is more stressful among male as they were anot able to share their grief and ask for help. Widowhood in women can make them vulnerable for violence, poverty, unemployment, cultural stigma. Mostly in forms of economic insecurity and cultural isolation. Widowed women in rural India have managed to get remarried again around only 10 percent. In general, 10% of the female population is widowed and therefore single and 3% of Indian men are widowed and single similarly.  \nLee et al., (2001) Their study on Gender differences in the depressive effect of widowhood in later life, documented the stronger adverse effect of widowhood on the psychological well-being of men when compared with women. Married and widowed people of age 65 and older were selected for the study. The study resulted in the interesting finding that Widowhood was more depressing for men than women. The study highlights the fact that married men were much less depressed than married women eventually widowed men and women were comparably depressed.
